Hi all,
I did a search and could not really find anything on this.

I have had my Civic sport for just over a week and went to the BP service station last night to fill her up for the first time.
I had all sorts of trouble; the pump kept cutting out every couple of seconds. I had to trickle in the fuel and it took ages to get only 20 dollars worth in. I then stopped at another station and had the same problem.. although it was a little better and I could at least keep the pump at half speed to get fuel in before it would cut off.
I could not completely fill my tank.

I will chat to the Dealer tomorrow but curious if anyone else has had similar probs

I have never had this problem with any other car.

There is nothing wrong with your Civic.

Don't put the nozzle in so deep - hold it low and only in slightly. Just have it deep enough so it is on the first notch of the fuel bowzer nozzle (it will look like it is more out than in) and make sure it is as low as it can go.

I guarantee you it will pump at full speed if you follow what I have said above. I have a lot of experience pumping fuel - remember the days when full service petrol stations were still around? Worked at one of those for years when I was younger.

Thanks for the quick response.
I was tempted to try that last night but as there is a spring loaded 'valve' down the tube there ( I assumed I had to use the nozzle to keep it open) I was worried that it would not open and would splash back the fuel

I was doing the exact opposite to what you suggested hehe. trying to push it in further and raise it

I will give it a try

It shouldn't splash if the nozzle is in there. If you are worried stand to the side of the car rather than in front of the fuel tank. If you have problems always lower the nozzle - as you are guaranteed click click click if you raise the nozzle.

Just hold it like you are doing number 1's and aim properly. You don't want your number 1's to go everywhere right?

Not to suck up or anything like tat..but thats why forums need moderators like yfin who can effectively contribute back to the forum community. to whoever was creating a small fuss recently

My gf has the same problem...forever complaining when she had to refill my car..
cant never quite make her understand her mistake. lol!

Hes right..
And when ur finished u have to jiggle it abit to get extra drops if u can.
:)
usualy i get like 10-15 drops

for some reason all hondas have this issue, the nozzle has to be only half in and lowered, like yfin said
another way u can do it is hold the nozzle upsidedown, seen a few ppl do this as well

I find the older BP stations are easier to use than the new...but thats just me.

Then yeh just chuck the nossle in a little bit and squeeze gently....and should b fine

i usually find that tilting to the side a bit helps with filling the petrol tank too.

Who here tilts the hose so that every last drop of petrol you pay for goes into your petrol tank? lol

the hose on shoulder ftmfw

Yeh it can really give ya the s**ts sometimes. It's called splashback,it cuts the pump off when it detects it,like it's full.I finially found that out the other day :)

isnt it cause of the pressure?
the tank is vacummed isnt it?
meaning that when you use yoru fuel it is vacummed packed, n that is what makes d sound when u open it . liek openin a coke bottle. casue the air rushes in, to pressurise.

so if there is air in you tank after n you try to put fuel in it (while fully shoving in the nozzle) it will stop cause the air must have room to get out before you can put fuel in. that is why its good to have a slight gap between teh nozzle n the fuel pipe thingy lol . so that while fuel is goin in - air can escape....

hope that made sense

i used to have that problem, then i turned the pump nozzle sideways and it works normally.

i lift the hose up so I get every drop I possibly can.

haha. filling petrol, its something I learnt when I was 16. Its not that hard.

yeh i use to hate it when the pump kept cutting out every 2 seconds (apparently has something to do with high pressure in the servos tanks?).

anyway, key is to just let the nozzle sit there half way in and support its own weight (with those ridges on the bottom). only give it 3/4 pressure as well well and listen to when its nearing the top so u know when to stop :)

I found it always helps to fill up when the car isen't on empty aswell because as mentioned the whole build up of gases in the tank causes the pump to cut out. If there is to much gas in the tank that's why you get hte cut out.

I never get to fill to the top :(

But yeah just do as everyone else said nozzle a bit in and just try different positions for the nozzle for watefa works and press softly!

AND THEN SHAKE IT LIKE A POLAROID PICTURE with the hose raised high to get every single drop :) if a single drop falls out when you take out that nozzle consider that filling a failure :)

i had that problem with mine, i can only fill my tank if the gun is on the side and filling up. its got to do with the bowser

Yeah, its the way you hold the nozzle,
nothing's wrong with your car.

that sht releases as soon as u take out the fuel cap

u can hear it so clear
so its jus the way u insert the nozzle

that happens to almost all the servo's i go to, exactly what was said before dont put the nozzle in all the way

Ive been told it is better for your car to fill up right before it goes under the half way mark... works for me :D

Sticking it in deep doesn't work
Gotta take it easy and soft push it in softly just at the beginning and let it sit there. Then squirt ur load however much u need. Some squirt more than others. Then pull it out once ur done.

mrwillz
20-09-2007, 04:39 PM
gota ease it in

be careful wen pulling out.. u dont want ne leaks..

sorry to bring this up again, I am having difficulty filling up the petrol after I change the fuel filter. Is this related at all or it is me that filling it incorrectly?

Jon_51
15-11-2007, 09:39 AM
lol, i can't see why the fuel filter in the engine bay would have any effect on the path into the fuel tank.
follow the steps afforementioned, don't jam it all the way in, you don't always have to give the bowser full throttle.
remember to earth out the nozzle of the bowser on the side of the fuel tank inlet, to avoid tiny static sparks near where theres alot of fuel vapour.

mrwillz

it is unrelated

if you shake it more than twice you are playing with it. I usually have to tilt mine to the side and put it in less when Im at a BP petrol station, Shell and Caltex worked fine, but Im sticking to BP as I find it runs better.

It cuts out because of the automatic fill limiter. The thing that stops the petrol spilling out all down the side of the car. From memory there's a little hole on the end of the nozzle which senses when there's petrol on it and it tells the bowser when to cut the flow.

Reminds me of that joke, how do you spot a porn star at the petrol station? He's the one that just before the tanks full, he pulls the nozzle out and sprays the rest all over the side of the car.
