View Full Version : DC5R jerks when cruising at 2k RPM

My car seems to jerk for a few seconds when I cruise ~2000 RPM or below. This tends to happen in 2nd and 3rd gear. Worse when I ease of the throttle a little bit. Has anyone experienced this in their car before? What can I do to rectify this?

Did this just happened recently?
How long have you been with the car for?

It has always been that way as far as I can remember. I only just bought the car. It only did 5000kms in my possession. I only noticed it lately coz when I first drove the car I was always cruisng at 3kRPM and above to hear the engine :D . It's only when I started driving in peak traffic that I started to notice this or on rough roads where my foot bounces on the throttle pedal.

Flicking the clutch or slowly releasing during traffic drive?

i release the clutch slowly

What speed is your DC5 at 2000RPM 2nd gear?

Mechanic is the last option.

I cant remember precisely but I'd say about 20kph

Usually in traffic i'd stay in gear 1. if you dont go above 20kph

but hey, thats just me.

Doesnt sound like theres anything wrong with your car.

But just wait til a DC5 owner reads it to confirm.

Maybe engine mounts? Try driving another manual car and see if you still jerk, you may need to practice more.

if you are in traffic and only creeping along, you can stay in 1st gear. only when u have space to speed up, change to 2nd gear and release slowly.

you could always keep your foot on the clutch after u change to 2nd, just dont accelerate with it down

I know i can rectify the problem if i roll the car. I was concerned maybe there was a fault in the car coz i struggle to cruise smoothly in 2000rpm. But i like the idea of keeping in 1st and be rev-happy like I did when i first got my hands on the car. Drive it how it's meant to be driven.

hrm sounds fairly normal for the DC5R, the engine mounts arent particularly stiff so the engine does mover around quite a bit. and also 2000rpm is very low really so the engine will take a bit to get moving.
and as for drivign if your stuck in traffic, youll find it much smother if you do change into 2nd quickly, first is very short and will jerk the car pretty hard if you let off to quickly once moving at over about 10km/h.

my car is new and it always jerked when underpowered, its normal
that what happends with small engines

^ Why would it jerk when its unpower?

No problem with jerking when at low revs as mentioned and even when the engine is laboured.

It like a clutch yerk, it happens when you accelerate very slowly, it like the fuel cuts out and on until you give enough throttle

Now the DC5 owners come. ):

2nd that.

Get it with my DC5r... and got it in my last car.

Just means your rev's are to low... down shift to 1st... and drive the car in 1st when in traffic.

also happens in first when pussy on the throttle in traffic but the jerk is worse in first but happens rearly

this happens in the FN2R too. i was hoping they would fix it with a newer car.

i tried this on the jazz but that was smooth as cruising at low revs.

if you really want to use 2nd gear at around 20km/h in traffic then just give the throttle a bit more gas and be gentle with the clutch...bring the revs up and you should have no problems with jerking.

I do it everyday in highway traffic.

it because we have a lighter flywheel.

if we had a heavy one it would be smother thats what i think and im sticking by it

Like jas_kidd32, I get this flat spot in a 2007 FD Civic, around the same RPM. No feathering the clutch, way after the shift from 1st, in the middle of just roling the throttle on. I dig the comment "learn to drive". I guess this would be a relevant comment if we were using a carby rather than injectors. But were not. It's weird thing because I can labour the FD up a hill, put my foot to the floor and the ecu will ignore most of my demands.

So I don't get it.

It must just be a gap in the map, I guess?

take your ecu fuse out and back in then it adjusts it self

i think thats true.

jazz got a heavy one. FN2R has a light weight fly of 5kg something.

Thanks for that EL. Is that fuse within the body of the ECU? Does the map get corrupted?

The fuse for the ecu is in the Engine Bay fuse box i think, its in your manual. I reset it on every mod i do, and when i change fuel type. but I try to only use BP Ultimate
Made a big difference after i installed my GruppeM, it was gay b4 i reset the ECU, it does small adjustments- self learning I been told

Thanks for that EL. Is that fuse within the body of the ECU? Does the map get corrupted?

This is quite normal, even my DC2 has this behaviour. Just hold the clutch in if you're under 2000 rpm, but anything above 2000 rpm should drive normally. Just don't ride the clutch too much, you will wear it out :D

hmm i did an experiment today while driving in traffic, and i can drive around in 3rd under 2000rpm with no problems...
and taking off in 2nd gear felt like when i take off at the lights in my auto dc5 in first gear...lol

haha same with me. I have no issues with cruising around at 2k rpm or under and i can take off in second with no issues as well. I think it may be a comfort issue with the manual gearbox. U said yourself u have been driving manual for 3 months, see how you go.

I also agree with El DC5. If you tap the throttle it will jerk because the gear ratios are pretty low especially first, second and third (takes 8krpm to get to 95ish in second!)

I think its an experience issue.
