View Full Version : Changing Oil Filter - how often?

I had my car serviced today and they replaced both oil and oil filter. now im aware that oil can be (and should be IMHO) changed every 5000kms, but i was surprised that my next scheduled service doesnt include the oil filter being changed (so the next "scheduled" change of the oil filter is in 20000kms time - i.e every 2nd scheduled service)

shouldnt the oil filter be changed at a minimum of 10000kms, and at 5000kms if you wish so??

Yeh, in most cases the oil filter is changed every 5-10k.
First time ive heard a mechanic schedule it 20k later...

yeh for newer cars nowdays services are needed less often, and the new oil filters nowdays will do the job fine for 20000ks. it really depends on how you drive your car and how hard you thrash it. AND also how much you wanna look after your car.
i change my filter everytime i give it some new oil every 5000ks, hopefully in the long run it'll pay off

If you value your car and don't mind spending less than $10 for a new oil filter, i suggest you change it every oil change or 5k/10k.

most service books will have the oil filter listed every 20k for newer models, however most people would just do it every 10k with the oil change

do mine whenever it requires an oil change

yeah the service schedule for honda's is every 10,000km or 6 months (whichever occurs first).
however on on type r's, s2k's and prelude vti-r's it's probably better to do every 5000km as they use a bit more oil.

obviously if you drive 'spiritedly' very often or take it to the track it may be wise to do it even more regularly pending on circumstances

Change it everytime you change oil. I like dealers who change oil filter with each oil change. :)

what happends if your oil filter comes undone? i did an oil/oil filter change 2 weeks ago and i found my oil filter fairly loose from the thread

Some apprentices tighten the filter too tightly and then they slightly loosen it, making the seal break. They shouldn't do that. I've always tightened hand tight and it doesn't come off. Not even with lots of high revving.

i used the excuse so i didnt have to go to work...

i called my manager from a payphone and told him that while i was driving my oil filter came off and there was hot oil everywhere and that i needed my car towed...

the next few nights i drove my dads car in and said my cars getting fixed up...

for the price of oil you would pay say $30-40 when you do the oil change you might as well spend the extra $10-12 for an OE Hamp oil filter+sump plug washer. that way you get to drain the oil inside the oil filter as well.

With every car I have owned an oil change goes hand in hand with a new filter.
Filters aren't that expensive in the grand scheme of things.

On cars without pods I will change the air filter maybe every 2nd or 3rd service and the fuel filter gets done about the same.

All cheap and easy to do.

Three out of four of our local Honda dealers in Brisbane go by the book and change every 20,000k. Only one of them changes every 10,000k. This is true because I rang each of them to specifically ask how often they change the filter.

Manufacturers state in log books to change oil at 15-20k and some air and fuel filter at 30-40k. Thats rediculous in some circustances.

Fact is that they dont want to scare poeple who dont know better from buying their cars. People think if their cars dont need to be serviced for 15Ks and they dont have to change service parts they are saving money. Its a mentality thing.

Hope that makes sence.

To the point, oil should be changed between 5-10k with the filter at 10k. Especially if you're using hamp, good sh*t.

how does hamp compare to OEM? I know th mazda speed oil filters increase oil pressure slightly (rx-8 with oil filter pressure gauge installed) does the hamp do the same?

Hamp filters JDM bling are they?

I buy them from my local Honda dealer 6 qty at a time, it's made in thailand and the finishing of the thread and the oil orifices are not as good as the genuine Honda blue oil filter which is made in Japan as well as in the US. I buy the Honda one when the Hamp one is out of stock as they are almost twice as $$$ at $20-21. I've seen pics of the Hamp synergy variety with a shorter body length, may be that's the performance version that is supposed to increase oil pressure slightly.

It's the same size as the genuine Honda filter, can't see it will increase oil pressure in this case but more importantly it wont case a drop in oil pressure from factory spec which you might with the larger diameter ones such as Ryco/Valvoline/Cooper brands oil filters at high revs where the oil filter body might swell.

I did mine today with all the Honda gear and as always my only complaint with working on a Honda is the access.

Always so damn fiddly!

every 10k is fine

By the way which oil filter do you guys use?, anything better than the OEM oil filter?

I would change it every 5-7K andd no more than 10K... You could really feel the engine working harder once it reaches near the 10K mark.
regarding Oil filters, for me
1. OEM
2. HAMP
3. Repco ones
4. MAX
5. anything else out there (I'd probably change it every 5K then)

5000 for me. I used to do my Civic every 10k KMs which took about 9 months but now I'm going to do it every 5000 KMs.

CRX only does about 2000 KMs/year so I'll just do that yearly.

5-8k Honda reps/engineers still do it every 10k with no dramas, but being such a small sump/filter element I change it every 5k for that reason alone

Mines replaced everytime it's serviced at my dealer.. as some have said either every 10,000km's or 6 months.. whichever comes first (My car btw its a ITR)

i've been using the ryco ones sold at SCA for a year now, i've never used oem before. do you guys recommend using oem? anything better than oem?

I also use the Repco ones, they do the job fine. More often than not I won't bother going OEM, but for things like thermostat seals you should always go OEM IMO (since the Bursons one will leak lol).

I've ever only used OEM and Hamp on my car, but have used Maxx and Coopers on the other family cars. My oil is always changed on average 1500-2000km's. All the K series engine, in the service manual say oil filter every 20,000km's, but that's pushing it. I've done a bit of my own research on oil filters with my sister's FD Civic, and have cut them up and stuff. Pretty much after 5000km's the filters done. From 5-10K km's the filter is past optimum filtering. Maxx filters say change every 5000km's aswell.

In terms of brands etc, i'd use OEM first, Hamp (I used the smaller one so these don't last as long. The increase oil pressure thing makes logical sense, but it does nothing according to my Defi oil pressure gauge.), Maxx. The coopers ones are crap.

shadou
30-04-2010, 02:14 PM
er are you sure K series are required every 20,000km? We did them every service regardless when I used to work at Honda.. not sure where you got your info =s

Anything under $20 is just cheap insurance, though mechanic is not wrong either by following log book so to say there is a reason why Honda put it at 20000kms.

Having said that, I change my oil, oil filter and spark plugs at every 2500kms and trans oil every 7500kms.

Oil filter - OEM Hamp does give a steady pressure and higher oil pressure.
- Drift oil filter (bigger housing + anti drain back valve) I saw about 3-5psi less of oil pressure which scared the shit out of me.

I change my engine oil every 5000km - 6000km and have been only using Toyo Roki filters.

I happen to work in a dealership of another manufactuer (ok its a regional area and we have three franchises one local two jap)
none of them have the same service intervals anything from 10k to 20k per service majors evey 40k or 60k according to our dealer reports "modern technology within engine and oil manufacture allows longer service intervals"
after seeing very dirty oil dropped from near new cars at 20k i personally will not let our cars go over 10k and one of these is running full synthetic oil, for the peace of mind that the oil is clean it offsets the additional costs of oil and filters,(and we have customers who request oil and filter change at every 5k)
As for filters the OEM is usually a better quality though check the box many OEM suppliers are now sourcing parts from any where ;; thailand, south africa, mexico supposedly all made with the manufacturers original specifications and are not different to original, is better to check them as they come out of the box as i have seen one that passed off as a factory second
