so i had a look at the undercarriage of my car while it was up on a hoist at the mechanics today. and a friend pointed out that it had no cat. mechanic also confirmed this. seems that when it was this way when i bought the car. seems i have a custom exhaust from the header onwards.

i had to go over the pits on one occasion and nothing was said by the inspector? maybe the inspector thought my resonator was a cat. lol.

so are cars made before 1995 exempt from having a cat? or am i just really lucky?

i would also like to take this chance to say ive done 520km on one tank and i still have about 1/8 or just under that of fuel left!!! :)

oh yea honda

u're just lucky...which is good, however u'd better fit a cat soon b4 ur luck runs out...

do u do highway driving or city driving all the time? if u say city driving, then it'd be a very good fuel consumption:)

i do a mix of both. probably more city driving. i use bp ultimate and i have the d15z1 vtec-e engine hence my nick.

is fitting and buying a cat expensive? any recommendations of any brands or models?

as suggested, it is hightly illegal.

in NSW (from memolry) -
$10k fine for having a gutted cat (ie. a "fake" cat)
$20k fine for having no cat

zco
23-09-2007, 01:12 AM
its not a 10k fine. my brother got done for no cat. he ran a test pipe on his car and got sent to EPA. they told him to fix it and come back.. got it cleared and bobs your uncle.

either my brother was mighty lucky, or the EPA wasnt doing their job properly.

Pff 10k fine, 1000$ per a cylinder. Its all a crock of shit. The fine up here in QLD is more for gutting a cat than not having one. You would have to be a cockhead to the transport boys for them to hand out a big fine for that anyway. I was done for not running one in my RX2 and on a 180sx. Got told to put one in both times and no fines, another guy i know got a 150$ fine for it. As for how did it pass roadworthy? My cars always seem to pass, if it aint there then i guess its easy to miss lol.

depends on who finds out you dont have a cat and how. if a cop finds you dont have one during their inspection, theres a big fine. but for roadworthy check, i think they may be more lenient. over here, depends on situation. there was a report in the police records of someone receiving a $75000 fine for no cat apparently, but that may have been because he had several vehicles without cats.

Defect for noise loudness if you exceed 90 dB for a car built after 1st January 1983.

And how about Harley's that are so Bloody loud ya can't even think when they rev past ya?
Where I work they go past all day everyday.

Not sure, bikes are limited to 94dB, but Harleys do exceed that. Guess you'll have to call up the EPA and ask.

I dont know who would be stupid enough to run no cat / guttered cat. Its been tested and there is little or no HP improvement.
Due to the large fines involved ( even by gossip) the point is its stupid ! Get a proper working cat y0 :)

most cops are too scared to pull harleys over, gf uncles got one and he said it himself...

i run no resenator on my b18 and yes it is massive loud, sounds very deep low and screams up high

ADR rules require 90db when stationary as the limit, and for in gear, up to 77db in second or third gear, travelling at 50km/h.

when i was going through engineer's cert back in the days, the noise tester has to be an an 45-degree angle, 2.5 meters (-ish) away from the exhaust tip.
not sure about the noise level in 2nd and/or 3rd gears.

hmm, i didnt type that out too clearly.

there are two tests they have to do for exhaust volume, one is when the vehicle is stationary. didnt really pay attention to how they measure, but it must not exceed 90db when the vehicle is stationary, and it should be roughly where your car hits 50km/h in second or third gear, depending on how they want to test.

then theres the vehicle in motion test, where your car must not exceed 77db when travelling at/to 50km/h in second or third gear, whichever they wish to test. i found this test annoying. my tailpipe recently fell off, so my exhaust is quiet at 2000-3000rpm and perfectly legal, but booming at every other part of the rev range.

of course there are fines in WA, all states and territories in australia have to comply with the Australian Design Rules, otherwise they wouldnt be the Australian Design Rules.

most race cars dont use a CAT. most race cars utilise extremely high octane fuels which generally dont contain as many impurities as street fuel, and have much greater efficiency rates. however, it would be optimal to have a catalytic converter as something like 80% of air contains nitrogen, which will combust into oxides of nitrogen in the atmosphere which is unstable and can cause harm to others, and the main idea of having a cat is to convert the oxides of nitrogen back to harmless N2. i think somewhere in this thread it was mentioned that all cars after 1983 must have a CAT, with no exemptions if theyre a street vehicle.

EDIT: oh and before i forget, dont some honda's have their cat integrated into the extractors?
