Hey i have a dilema. I just bought a 1995 Honda Integra VTiR. It only has 98,000k on it and it is absolutely stock. My problem is, i've been trying to hear/feel when Vtec is suppose to engage and i cant notice it. Is this noticeable or not? i've put my old K&N air filter and still i dont hear any note change. Its loud but no change. I have noticed that there is a small...very small amount of oil sipping out in between the head and the Vtec solenoid. Would this "leak" prevent my car from hitting Vtec due to the drop in oil pressure?

was it a panel or pod filter you put on?
panels don't really make much difference when it comes to induction noise

but even with a pod, the [acronym:b23f4ad92d="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:b23f4ad92d] kickin isn't too noticeable
here's a vid of a Vti-R with a pod filter sitting in the stock airbox (with the top off)

well mate, bone stock i could hear and feel vtec no worries. i put a pod on not long ago and can really hear vtec now. it is definately noticeable.

the usual checks; had your car warmed up? did you have accelerator flat to the floor?
i'm no mechanic so i have no idea about your oil problem...

i'd say the vtec isnt that loud to be highly 'noticeable'... it must suit adr etc, so the engine cant make that much noise during acceleration?... correct me if im wrong but yeh... maybe try in a quiet place with no music on and stuff and u might hear the slight change in note

i mean it does pull...but just not sure how fast it should pull because ive never had vtec before...but i read in lots of forums that the vtec changeover is very noticeable but i just cant hear/feel it. And the slight oil leak through the valve cover and the solenoid kinda makes me wonder if that stopping it from engaging.

Put the car on the dyno..pay for a power run n see where its at....

Dynos are great diagnostic tools

How much does a dyno run cost? is there aonther way of telling whether Vtec is working?

BLKCRX

anywher from 60 - 100$ for a run... depending where in aust u r.. or who u go see.... most dyno owners sohuld for that cost help dignose any problems and recommened options.
There are other ways such as dataloggin or pluggin up comptuers to the car and road testing.. but not many workshops have these skills.

if u have a multimetre with long wiring, wire in to the power for the VTEc soleniod. when u see voltage at 5,500 rpms, u knwo its working.

even easier way, grab a 12V light + some cabling. Attach one end to the green(i think) wire comming fromt he vtec solenoid, and appreiote earth to the other. The light should activate within the 5000rpm range.

hmm ok is there a walkthrough around that tells you how to build a vtec light? also i heard that if the bulb is rated at a high wattage, it takes most of the power and vtec doesnt engage. is this true?

if u have a multimetre with long wiring, wire in to the power for the VTEc soleniod. when u see voltage at 5,500 rpms, u knwo its working.

yeah i guess u could do that
but the [acronym:d2d9abaa7a="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:d2d9abaa7a] engagement point for the DC2 VTi-R is 4400rpm stock.
at 5800 its the butterflies that u hear

hrm that's right, but I thought butterfly valve for the dual-tract IM opens at 3500.. then [acronym:ebeb352ea3="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:ebeb352ea3] at ~4500 RPM..

thanks to the Dual-tract IM on the B18C and the lower [acronym:ebeb352ea3="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:ebeb352ea3] switch point, the [acronym:ebeb352ea3="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:ebeb352ea3] 'noise' is less noticable to for example an EK4 civic VTiR that changes in at ~5500RPM with a very defined sound.

now you can test easilly to see when you DONT have [acronym:ebeb352ea3="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:ebeb352ea3].. go for a drive when motor is cold.. only rev it to 6000RPM with PARTIAL THROTTLE, and you will NOT get any [acronym:ebeb352ea3="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:ebeb352ea3].. my [acronym:ebeb352ea3="Single Overhead Cam"]SOHC[/acronym:ebeb352ea3] [acronym:ebeb352ea3="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:ebeb352ea3] makes a kinda whiney high-pitched noise when [acronym:ebeb352ea3="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:ebeb352ea3] is not working because too cold..

once it's warmed up to operating temp, try again this time with FULL THROTTLE and at 4500 it should swith over to the Hi-Lift cam lobe and make a slightly more aggressive engine note..

somethings up cos when my vtec engage its not just the induction noise and the seat of the pants dyno telling me it working. the sound of the whole engine goes from sedate to screaming hehe.

all the vti-r's ive raced, i can easily hear the vtec kicking in. Its usually because thier engine bay is next to my driver side window, fading into the distance :P

g3vtir - u do noe that to hear/feel vtec, u have to rev it to or close to it's redline. Not a smart-alec comment, but i assume that you're new to the VTEC ball-game and so just like to check it with you.

Have you any idea what the sound of VTEC kicking in sounds like at all? Maybe it works, but you just dont know that that's the sound of VTEC.

Get a mate who has a little bit more experience with how VTEC sounds like and get him to help you point it out before you unknowingly open your wallet.

my 2c and gd luck working out your problem. :)

ToE,

yeah i rev my cars hard.....i dont pussy foot it...

i know what the sound is when vtec kicks in. My bro and a friend both have b16 and man they are obvious when VTEC kicks in.

Last night i did test runs again, between 5k and 6k i heard something but people say that its the secondary intake runners opening up but it sounded like vtec. i guess it aint vtec coz people say vtec kicks in at 4400.

di you have a vtir?

toE
05-08-2004, 07:11 AM
no, i do not have a VTi-R :(

i guess you're gonna have to wait for a coupla more internet mechanics to come and help you out or have a R flowing mechanic to have a look. :P

Yes VTEC lights are great, i have one in my car, just get a simple LED a resister dont matter how high or low it is just depends on the brighness you want the light... run the positive wire to the vtec wire green/yellow on my accord and the other to an earthand away you go ricer vtec light ;)

g3vtir
06-08-2004, 12:06 PM
cool...but where do i find the vtec wire?

vtecinaccord
06-08-2004, 12:15 PM
either lift your carpet to your ECU it will be there or do it the hard way and run a wire from the VTEC soloniod in the engine bay on the top next to the distributer... or the abouts buya manual.

g3vtir
06-08-2004, 01:27 PM
which wire is it on the ECU?

vtecinaccord
06-08-2004, 01:35 PM
same color green with yellow stripe. pretty sure thats the combo

g3vtir
06-08-2004, 01:39 PM
so i wire up the led to the green and yellow striped wire...and the other LED contact point goes to the chassis?

vtecinaccord
06-08-2004, 04:21 PM
YES make sure that you put a resister of some sort on the positive side of the led so the 12 volt signal from the ECU doesnt fry the LED

Psyklops
06-08-2004, 04:23 PM
or get a 12 V DC LED...they are available

just take it to a honda mechanic. easy.
