Is the oil on the top of the spark plug (as in the lobe where the spark plug lead clips onto) or the spark element itself (when you remove the spark plug)?

Well the thread is supposed to be sitting in the head...

Is the oil on the spark electrode or on the terminal?

if he says bottom then there is some serious problems.

Normal cause of this is the seal between the valve cover and the spark plug hole is persished or missing. Lots of oil gets thrown around in there. Two or three cars in our local crx club have had this problem in the last two months. You can get new ones, or high temp silicone the old ones.

Go to a mechanic and get them to check it out, get a compression test.

if it's the top of this pic it will be your cylinder tube seals. you'll need to replace them, you may as well do your rocker cover gasket at the same time

^^^^^

He needs to inspect the hole for oil before he takes his plug out.

Correct, if the oil is around the top of the spark plug and he goes to take it out its all gonna run down onto the bottom of the spark plug before he even gets to see it properly.

Leading him to believe that the head gasket is rooted when it could be something else. (o-rings most likely)
