View Full Version : No Studs...

As i was driving home.... i got back to my area and noticed my wheel was shaking. So my first thought was flat tyre got out had a look all four were fine. Got home straight after and was having a look when my dad spotted the problem.. 3 of the wheel studs had snapped off and my entire tyre was holding on by one stud! so big dramas to get it fix because we could not tow it any were as the last stud snapped of reversing it on the tow truck.
the entire caliper and disk brake had fallen into the inside of my mag... so if my tyre had fallen forward my front body of my car would have smashed on the floor. and as my dad said "broken his beautiful driveway" not really caring about my car....
Any thoughts on what could have happened there???? rather odd
Thank you to Hondatechy for coming to my place and fixing it on the spot absolute legend!:thumbsup:

have u done anything recently that required u to remove them?!?
Integra21
28-09-2007, 02:59 PM
my mechanic had removed them to fix the brakes but he had removed both the front ones... only the one had the problem. i first thought it could have been over tightened or not tight enough causing the studs to move around and eventually snap one by one...
but could it have been something else... my mate mentioned someone trying to steel my tyres...would'nt understand why though lol i've seen better

in case it happens next time...u can take out 1 bolt from each ot the other wheels and use the 3 bolts to hold the loose wheel...ur car should be able to hold up enough to get you home...save ur tow truck money...

f*kn thieves...
2 loose bolts can cause enough vibration to loosen the others...
its a good thing u'r alright mate...

damn...
i remember drivin home from work and a guy driving an EK with 19's had his left front rolling off whilst he was turning at a round about...
i stopped to help him lift up the front left of the car so he can get the jack under the point because when i got there the front left disk brake sitting off the ground holding the weight...
it turned out he had just changed the rims and his old rims had lower offset and he used spacers...when he put on the new rims which stuck out more, he forgot to remove the spacer from the front left...

WOW! Might have been badly overtorqued. Did the any of the tyre places use a rattlegun on your wheelnuts?
Integra21
28-09-2007, 06:25 PM
no they didnt, i was watching him the whole time, the last time i did any work on my tyre was about 2 months ago maybe even more...

someone said that the mags might not have fit to well on the studs making them were out and put to much pressure and eventually snapped of... that was another theory someone gave me.. but its a wonder why only one had this happen to it and all 3 studs snapped..

Have people heard of such things as hub rings? 'Apparently' the wheels are normally sitting on the studs them selves, with the 'rings' installed apparently they help to move the load off the studs... anyone confirm this?
Integra21
28-09-2007, 06:35 PM
Is that not used whilst installation of the studs themselve... or i may be wrong.. probebly am lol
Integra21
28-09-2007, 06:36 PM
but perhaps it was not used in my case casing the wheel to vibrate....it wasnt quite centred... not to sure about this one i could just be thinking of something else...
Integra21

Actually.....as the hub was being removed i think i saw one on...:o might just shutup now haha

Yeah, if it doesn't exactly match the hub, you would have needed hub-centric rings to reduce the load on the studs.

what about the quality of the wheel?
or the type of nut used against it?
Integra21
28-09-2007, 08:59 PM
To me the quality of the nuts and wheels didnt seem to be the problem.. but maybe i thought wrong, i am getting all 3 other tyres checked out just to be on the safe side...

Even if you had the hardest nuts in the world, it still won't snap the studs off. Either it's been overtightened too much or vibrations in the wheels have damaged the studs. The 2nd is easy to detect while driving though. I think it's the first one. The air-powered rattleguns have very high tightening torque.

No rattlegun was used in the last service im not sure its a hard one....

Could be from a service previous to that, or when you changed tyres, or when you first got the rims. Could be from anytime before and the damage could have slowly grown from then.

I think that might be it... because the rims were on when i bought the car it could have been the previous owner didnt do it properly...

I dont think he was talking about how hard the nuts were, they could have had the wrong pitch on the seat causing only a small amout to contact the rim, then they could work loose. most of the times they break from being loose and not from over tightening with a rattle gun. you said on the first page that the wheels were off when the brakes were done, how long ago? I vote loose nuts.:p

so now, its either over tightening or under tightening?

Looks like a tempe tyres job to me.
Problem is most likely u havent got hubcentric rings or there the wrong size and your studs took all the weight.

You are so incredibly lucky!!
I have heard of wheel nuts breaking before from over tightening wheel nuts but never seen it.
A proper mechanic would never just go at your wheel nuts with a rattle gun though, should always use torque bars or a torque spanner.

i would say i had the tyres off about 2 months ago if not more. Also i do have the hub ring....

Do your hub rings fit perfectly in the rim's centre hub space?
aimre
01-10-2007, 09:37 PM
if the nuts were over torqued, the studs would be thinner just before the break

To me they seem to fit perfectly.. im just wondering could this happen to the other 3 tyres...??? makes me a little paranoid to drive sometimes...

ok well im back with the same problem and the other tyre could this possibly be that my rims are just not suited for my car? They have both been my front tyres. Please Help!!! lol

are they rubbing against the shock??
Limbo
10-02-2008, 02:22 AM
never seen stud snap off wheels before. ANd if they were being stolen its easier to just take off the bolts they wouldn't bother with snapping your studs. That takes alot of strength.
I'd say they snapped due to rattle gun used too much in the past and the strength slowly weaking to a point where hitting a pothole or something has snapped them
Just incase i'd get all the studs changed mate. I think yonas sells them. Nto too expensive for the piece of mind

if this was a prob you would see big rum marks on the car and it would make alot of noise from rubbing

I first thought that someone was trying to steal my rims but now that its happened to the other one i think there is another problem. i think the rattle gun theory is whats going on.... also do you think it could be that my rims are not suited for my? or would they have known this when they were putting them on?
I'm not to sure what you mean by rubbing against the shock, phantom civic?

is there sufficient gap between shocks and tyre?
thats alot of bad luck. im getting parnoid about my studs now hahaha.
didnt know overtightening can cause such an issue as to breaking the studs.
iv heard of rims breaking but not studs

from what my honda tech has said there is nothing wrong all he can think of is over tightening....... but imagine how i feel driving lol im always paranoid now when i drive....hmm is my tyre going to fall of? lollll
