Generally reliable car. just a few issues to look for:

- engine mounts as said by Perry. common problem, not costly to fix;
- steering rack noise. also common issue, just need to grease it up;
- central locking stuff up. just need to replace it, aftermarket stuff will do;
- lever on the recaro falls off, very easy to fix, can be DIY.

also check the following:
- check the equipments to see if you are buying a normal type r or a Comfort package (most common);
- check if the car has factory HID if it's a C package. (some RAW replaced them with normal helogens);

otherwise general used car checks.

Hi everyone, anyone here with an ep3r running buddyclub racing spec coilovers? I got mine installed but my left front wheel has extremely bad toe out which is to the point of being un-drivable, my mech says the coilover might not even be for my car as the suspension geometry changed drastically which it shouldnt have when changing to specific coilovers for a model, even though my front right wheel is straight as an arrow and the rears fit... any help is greatly appreciated.

hey, i got them on my car.. so what was your question?

my question is, was it the same case with you when you installed these coilovers on your ep3r? as in the front left coilover installed showed massive toe out angle which rendered the car undrivable, and adjusting the toe angle back to alignment would be dangerous as the adjusting the toe that far to be aligned would leave little thread connected to the tie rods which can potentially disconnect during driving.
My mech actually thinks these coilovers i bought arent even for the ep3r as the suspension geometry went overly wonky after installation.
thanks for your help

when the coilovers were put it on it was pretty much like plug and play, had to adjust the tie rod ends abit to reach the coilovers but thats about it. when my car got defected i took them off to put the stock suspension on and changed it over again after the defect was gone and it was like normal.

hi,

looking for new tyres and need some advice,

is it wise to go from 205/45/17 to 215/45/17 ??

wheel is thus bigger and does that mean slower start off? is the difference really that big?

I did it. 205 to 215. Difference isn't too noticeable - I notice there is more flex in the tyre when cornering however the comfort was a lot better (could've also been due to new tyres compared to my old worn ones). Didn't notice too much in terms of slower start off.

i'd go 215/45/17 as its a common size which means more choice and cheaper.

JDM DC5R runs 215/45 from factory.

yeah, main reason for the change is price and availability. bloody 205/45/17 quotes so expensive.

also will the speedo be off?

but less margin for error.

Would the be dc5r coilovers maybe?

You'd know if its DC5 cause they dont fit straight on!

there are people running DC5 coilovers in EP3 without much trouble. i'd think the problem is bigger than that.

Mr LEE is correct here :)

It should bring it with in 2-4kph under actual speedo reading. Should'nt change anything in terms of margin for error as speeding is bad......mmmmmmmmkay!

Eskimo_firefighter
21-06-2010, 09:40 PM
it could be your driveshafts that is worn out, or sometimes the cv boot is split open and exposed to weather and dirt going into the cv joints and damaging it. I dont know what the symptoms of a worn cv joint is but since its on the drivers side only it can very well be a possiblity, you can even check this out by yourself if you just look into the wheel and see if there is grease all over the place. Best of luck.

thanks for the quick replies guys, well i recently serviced the car cause i didnt want to wait for it to hit 60k still along way and oils/filter was pretty crap so yeah had to change everything. probably jack the car up tmr and fiddle around. cause the sound came from a pretty low spot when i first heard it, thought it was my wheel joints or my mech dropped a tool and didnt take it out and it was rattling but there was nothing.

hey eskimo i wouldnt waste my time with a mugen airbox/js racing box looks like a branded oem airbox, probably a different filter is used thats better than oem or structure of it for better airflow, mugen airbox is gonna need the mugen grill. since i got my gruppe m on it seems awhole lot different pricey but it wasnt an issue, could get cai? hear its bang for buck leaves a hole in your splash guard ;) and plenty of space in your engine bay.

I run a J's Racing intake box with J's Racing Power flow filter. Down low, the torque is really different. Definitely worth the money. But u will need the Mugen grille to complement it, since its sucking up air from the LH top of the grille.

Yeah I agree with that. I recently got a Fujita CAI from ebay for about $350 so that would be the way to go imo if you were thinking of modding the filter. Fujita is developed by the Injen people but the difference is Injen apparently give the most gains between the two. From my knowledge Injen = more performance, Fujita = stronger vtec changeover. personally i wouldn't bother with K&N filter knowing how much more enjoyment I have got with the Fujita installed from stock airbox. If your a baller you can go with the GruppeM CAI but just be wary that the fit isnt as good as the Injen or Fujita so expect some rattling

so i had a look under the car, found the tie rod doesnt look like the rubber bits have spilt, cv i think they look fine no grease well double check tmr, mounts are fine. should i just get a wheel allignment/balance? i shook the right wheel left and right and in and out doesnt budge cause a mate of mine told me to try it to narrow it down to tie or wheel bearings. i dont have tools to undo the cover to get a look at the sparkies but i dont think theyre worn out yet since they tend to last over 100k's?

if the price is similar, i'd probably get the K & N. but with a CAI, the air filter is down under the passenger side headlight, so you can't really see it inside the engine bay. and you will only have empty space when you take out the stock airbox.

i have to say the car feels great with CAI and the vtec sound along is worth the cost. beware that u might lose a little low down torque with a CAI but with a cat back, there are definitely gain and no more lost torque.

Hey ya guys

Driving to work the other day the gear stick went all loose.....Paniced...tranny was stuck in 3rd. Miles from anywhere. Got it on a tow truck to a pretty good mechanic who has never seen an ep3 but was awesome on all my other cars(nonimport). A linkage bolt dropped out into the box which they recoverd, no damage. He said a link arm was bent and they are gonna try and straighten it tomorrow. If all goes well, but he said they have no idea how it all goes back together :((((((

I checked my EP3 downloaded workshop manual but it only has 5 speed.

Anyone have a breakdown of this or pics I can take to him. Would really appreciate any info here. Have a CNC on stand by if anything breaks(perks of the job) but no one seems to know how the lego set goes back together :(

Thanks

in all seriousness can someone help me out got a problem with my car cant seem to find the right cause...got the wheels alligned/balanced, lifted the car up to check tie rod and seeing if anything has been leaking or greasy bit. looking at the mounts it seems fine to me doesnt seem to be broken, driving off 1st from the lights and ive tried it alot recently to see if it was my clutch or what not theres a squeaking noise when im moving the steering wheel slightly side to side gently. driving to castle hill yesterday and back going on cumb hwy problems got worse squeaks got louder and heavy vibrations in the steering wheel. is it possible the gruppe m is rubbing against the hood? not sure..

what are your thoughts on JSA in preston? ive heard ALOT of bad feedback from Skyline AU but wanted to know from actual experiences.

they have a ep3 listed for 21,999 on carsales. only reason im interested is cos im wanting to trade my current daily in (toyota camry LOL).

the price seems good and from the pictures - looks like nothings wrong with it. they're stating that RACV checks are welcome.

are there any other things i can do to make sure i don't buy a trainwreck?

heres the link for the car:

If ur getting squeak noises while turning the steering wheel side to side it could b ur steering rack. Does it sound asif its coming from behind ur steering wheel ?

yeah its coming from behind the steering wheel steve.

yeap sounds like it may b ur steering rack. Common problem on ep3 steering racks and can b fixed with abit of lubrication :) took mine to hannys and they fixed it up for me. You can do it urself by pulling back the rubber boot on ur steering rack and getting some lube in there. People on this forum have done it and people in uk have done it aswell.

Hmm. Ep3 owners sell it to me

what is an average

fuel consumption / ks out of a tank
average insurance costs etc ?

I'm looking at one as a weekend car - and it's a natural progression from other smaller cheaper less mature modded fwds

Ben,

I still have half a tank left after today, so far I have done about 350kms. This has been a mixture of city driving, along with Freeway Driving (with a bit of vtec of course).

On a good round I usually get between 550 - 650kms per tank.

bennjamin

thanks for those thoughts....more or less like any other civic then. That is , the more you thrash it the worse the economy :)

Anyways , seen a couple sofar. How are people going about using the ep3 for trackwork - how are the engines / transmission taking occasional or more use ?

You need to get you car checked out...have you worked out the average?? Because sometimes the fuel gauge isn't a good indication as it may differ 5-10 litres between cars...!

May car is moded with a little more than I/H/E :) and Im still getting 9-10lt/100. Better when travelling on free/highway!

GEG

even with some heavy driving, that has got to be the sign of something not running right

my car is running a fujita cold air, and a cat back exhaust - and with only city driving i average 450, and around 500 when i put in my new clutch (being extra cautious)

you guys should really try driving soft for a tank, just to check. it will help you in the long run to avoid costly problems, and when the time comes - to sell on!

That's because you're blacklisted with them as a street racer who cheats by using nos!

You'll find that all these places only really look after 'older' people for some reason :(

I drive 10mins to and from work everyday as well, the car spends more time warming up then me driving it. I got I/H/E and I get 9-10L/100km. Even on the Great Alpine Road I still averaged 10L/100km.

Anyone able to help me out with this one?

I bought my car at 70,000km, did a minor at 74,0000km, now I'm due for the 84,000km.
Now the car was imported around 65,000km, so I assume they did a major then.
Should I do a major now, or should I delay it? The manual says the 80,000 is a major.

Thanks.

get abit lazy to warm up the car before heading off. i'll refill next week or so and probably drive around for longer and warm the car up before driving? usually get more fuel out of bp ultimate rather than shell vpower.

Ben, it really depends on how you drive (i.e accelerate & steer) that could cause this, but really 99% of the time it's not an issue.

I have a pre FL and acceleration at around 7k on a corner will make it torque like a bitch, but at the particular point I am usually hanging on pretty tight :)

And its a daily drive ..Suburb - Highway - Suburbs with zero traffic :) and and then return during peak traffic :(

Get around 620 - 650 Km on Ron98.

Oh and its noisy and my large ass finds the recaros very hard and uncomfortable.

Love every minute of it :)
