Hi guys,

I have a slight problem with my integra vti-r. Only during sprited driving, I've noticed that during gear changes, particulary 2nd to 3rd gear, the transmission grinds (I can feel the speed of the cogs shifting) as I shift. Doesn't make much noise though. Does not happen during normal driving. Also notice that its hard to get into 1st gear at times (not all the time) unless the clutch is fully pressed in to the floor. Any ideas as to whats the cause? I've searched but got no solid answers. Best case scenario, the gearbox oil needs replacing (not sure when it was last changed) or another thing could be the 2nd or 3rd gear sycros. Has anyone had similar problems?

Cheers,

never had that problem when i have my teg, as you have mentioned i would first change the gearbox oil with some genuine mtf. i have heard from several members here the new honda mtf 06 is great stuff. try that first especially considering you don't know when it was last done.

When you shift, you should press the clutch all the way to the floor.

If it is only in 2nd to 3rd shifts, then it is probably the synchros.

its ur synchrose and possibly ur clutch. Bout 3weeks ago i had the exactly same thing happen to my dc2r. From 2nd to 3rd it grinded. Deffenetly ur synchrose man.
In the end i woke up one morning and could not even put it to reverse, like my synchrose were gooone. Took it to machanics and they said my synchrose and my clutch was gooone, and had to import da parts from japan. So i've bin off da rd eva since buh get it bak next wed.

Hope dat helped.

When did you last get your transmission fluid changed?
And what clutch do you have?

Reverse may not be a synchros problem, cause it doesnt have any, buh grinding from any gear besides reverse in any car means its da synchros.
Also i realli couldnt get it into reverse. It wasnt cause its a bitch...it reali wouldnt go in, cause if i like smashed it into reverse all it did was grind more.

Buh whos cares bout my reverse. dats my problem which is gettin fixed now. juz tryin to help dc2-forshizzle wif his synchros problem.

I agree! when i was working at honda! even the brand new CRV's had trouble going into first! or reverse! had to put it in another gear first

I got the same thing going on, usually if im going into reverse i just put it neutral lift clutch then press all the way and go to reverse or first

Yeah, forgot to mention that reverse is sometimes hard, especially in the mornings when everything is cold...gotta put it in first then chuck it in reverse...hmmm iwill the syncros get worse as time goes on?? I just had my transmission out about 6 months ago, don't want to do it again...it doesn't crunch at all during normal driving conditions.

So are you guys saying Honda fails at making manual transmission? D:
Mine had that problem for like 8 hours, before I changed the transmission oil. (Which I was told it was due to change by a mechanic)

I got that change, and the gear slides in perfectly fine.

Otherwise do you guys warm up your car before driving?

i duno if its my driving byt reverse is a pain for me aswel. i got gearbox oil changed... hasnt done much. im going by the ideas on this thread and ild assume its the synchros aswel... dont have $1300 lying around atm so i guess il have to put up with it... let us know how you go by fixing bcoz i think its a common prob with most hondas

Well, most Hondas have smooth-shifting gearboxes. That means the synchros are softer/finer. If Honda didn't mind making clunky gearboxs, they could use tougher synchros for longevity.

had the same problem in my old integra vtir, change the oil first.

if problem is still there, take it to honda or a gearbox specialist and they will find out whats wrong.

Maintenance is the key

Just like to add that it is more than likely your syncros just worn, But dont be a fool and replace syncros alone! The syncros are grabbed by the gear sleeve (selector) and when you do a bad shift what do you think the syncros are grinding against? yes the gear sleeve (selectors). So if you did replace syncros alone they are just going to rub on the rounded teeth of the selector and wear each other out super quick. IT IS WORTH CHECKING EVERYTHING FIRST BEFORE ORDERING ANYTHING BECAUSE THERE IS A CHANCE THAT THE SELECTORS ARE FINE. www.gear-speed.com does a full syncro and selector set, even carbon coated 3-4-5 syncro for added strength but it will set you back just over $1050 including airmail (3-5days). SOME COMMON SENCE -- NEVER EVER RUN YOUR GEARBOX WITH LOW OR NO TRANS FLUID, NOT EVEN JUST ROUND THE BLOCK, IT WILL!!! KILL SYNCROS Thanks guys and girls.
