Hey guys,

I'm not sure if this has been asked or not but i been working on my EK interior recently and i got some preferated vinyl material that i want to add for my door trims...

Can you guys please kindly advice me on how to go about this... I've got a few questions and if you can add in a few advices and hints then that would be great :)

First, what would be the best way to cut the vinyl to door trim shapes... Then do i just stick the vinyl on the existing factory material or do i rip that off first and then stick the vinyl on... What would be the best sort of glue to use for this application so it doesnt bubble up later in the future... and finally, do i use a hair drier to stretch the material or not necessary???

I would really appreciate some really good help and good points on how to go about this... If anyone has a step by step DIY then it would be fantastic!!!

Cheers guys,

Johnny.

follow that.and try to get a spray glue that works well in heat....cuz it gets mighty hot in car during the day and poor quality glue will lose its adhesion when it melts so to speak.i used 'permatex' headliner and carpet adhesive from autobarn and its still all good

Yer i can follow that and shouldnt be a problem... Although, my main concern is should i peel off the factory material first or just glue the vinyl on top of the existing factory material???

Also, is permatex the best stuff out there or is there something better that would work instantly???

Cheers...

BTW - love your avator mechanic hahahaha thats sick :p

Also, forgot to ask... Should i like heat up the vinyl before sticking on the trim to stretch it out or dont need to do that???

Ive read that somewhere b4 but thought i'll make sure...

I wanna do exactly what you're doing as well. I wanted too provide more of a cushion for my door trims though. Pimp spec.

Yer, that's why i was thinking of applying the vinyl on top of the existing material but i been told to take it off and then put vinyl on top of the plastic for it to last longer...

I am starting with the armrest in the middle to see how that turns out and then go to the doors.

Will post up pics soon when its done :)

If you add the vinyl ontop of the current fabric you'll find it will peel easy and loose adhesion no matter what you use. Best to take the fabric off and get a thin sheet of foam, glue that down then glue onto the foam. holds adhesive better then standered fabric. Also dependin on you doorcards you mite want to get the pods removed so you can get the vinyl pulled back behind the door card for better fit. With my door cards the only issue i had was the plastic welding on the pods... Heres a pic of mine

WOW... That looks crazy bro!!! Nice combinantion there with the red stitching... Who did it for you anyways, was it all home made or professional???

Do you have a DIY for the stitching or for the whole thing even?

Cheers.

nah mate is a upholster by trade. took into his workshop and they did all the stitching and stuff. got my gearboot and handbrake boot done aswell. Yeah it all came up real nice. Alot better then the gray fabric that was on the door trims.

Yeah mine cost me all up with plastic welding $380 but i got the gear boot and handbrake cover done at the same time. The pods cost me about 120 each. Check if they have photos of other work they've done before. Had mate who had vinyl work done and it blistered within a week. There's some dodgey upholsters around.

I got my carpet quoted to be $280 not inc boot for black capret. not worth it imo.
gonna redo underlay (very thick & soft, pimp spec) and drill it on top myself, the moulding is fairly thick so some small headed self tapping screws + black carpet + black screws + $30 per metre black carpet at bunnings 2M wide + bunnings discount = happy steve88.

as for vinyl, gonna try some vinyl spray out and make that also pitch black. lucky i got some mates at bunnings that can help me out too colour it.

i just cant trust people too work on inside of my car, id rather learn it do it right and if i **** it up. do it again, at least i know im aiming for the best and not doing *just another job*.

Yer, im with ya there steve88 cos i dont trust anyone working on my car either when im not there cos u never know what they do to it... The best and fun thing is to try things urself if you have time and go "wow, did i just do all this myself?" and have a beer to celebrate what you learned lol...

All i want is someone to run red stitching across my vinyl and i'll do everything else myself... I'll find out who can do it around my area tomo!!!

I will post some pics by next weekend ;)

Cheers.

i reckon get your grandma or mum too help you out with sewing. get them to remove old stitchings and just restitch with red. although im not sure if where the stitching-removed would show holes? who knows, something ill find out when i redo my upholstory

Spoke to the lad who did my pods. he advised if you do get the stitching done just get it done in red the first time. As the vinyl when restretched will show the holes and its hard to mask them unles you follow the previous hole.

Good luck doin it yourself anyway. I didnt have a sewing machine so that's why i didnt do my own....
