View Full Version : Having Engine Belts too tight...
i had my car inspected the other day and it seems my car's belts were way too tight...
i've been driving the car for maybe 30,000kms like that...
my PS belt has feathered on the outside...
not sure how the timing belt looks like...
i'm having all the belts changed...
has this possibly caused damage to other components of my engine???
pulleys, etc...??? im not sure the full architecture where the belts are...
i see ppl talking about tensioners, etc...
should there be other things needing to be replaced besides the belts???

only if its damaged. and let me tell you, you would know if its was. usually the crank shaft snaps or the front crank brearing could fail. thats if they where very very tigth.
the car drives ok...
so i guess its not too tight as like you said...
its just that the belts weren't tensioned correctly when they were installed before...
so they were wearing quicker... they said it is best to change it...
my current timing belt was changed from what i know was approx. 35,000km ago, but the other belts weren't changed...

one of the belts were tighten so tight that one day the bolt of the pulley broke off causing damage to the crank pulley and alternator pulley lip was bent. when we check the belt it was the wrong one (smaller to size than to spec)

just curious though with the timing belt inside the engine.. is it not the tensioner that determines the tension? is it even possible to even put the timing belt on too tight? or did the thread start really mean the accessory belts and accidentally called them timing belts?

nfi what the thread starter ment, but ietherway a tight belt isnt good.
yes the timing belt has a tentioner, but its a manual tentioner which means it can be done up to tight as well. a tight timing belt makes a wuring noise.
my cars belts are too tight...
just wanted to find out what effects it has on the engine in terms of wear and tear on parts...
and can it have potential problems if not corrected...
my belts are old and apparently are too tight... i havent experienced anything like a snapped crank coz im still driving it...
but others might have run into this same problem with their belts...

^^yeah but which belts are you talking about? the one inside the engine (timing) or the accessory ones outside (ie AC,PS)?
either way, ECU-MAN and teaseR have great examples above. I too experienced what happened to teaseR... car actually felt so much more responsive not having the alternator running off the belt... checked when i got home and the bolt for the tensioner snapped.

the thread starter is refering to the drive belt/ accessories belt
maybe in ur case the alternator bolt was over tighten cuasing it to fail??

Belts that are too tight will cause excessive pressure on the bearings of alternators,p/s pumps,no.1 main bearing, oil pump rotors.Have seen a couple of crank snout failures also.
