hey everyone,
im having some speaker and sound issues at the momment. Here is the situation:

1. Using a sony 52w x 4 headunit kinda old. Replaced the rear speakers with cheap sony 6x9 speakers and front with mtx splits. Sound result = not too bad and the bass can be mistaken for a very small crappy subwoofer.

2. Same speaker setup, but using a jvc dvd headunit, 50w x 4. Sound quality not as clear but bass much stronger. But sounds ok for a system without an amplifer or subwoofer.

This was in a em1, now changed to prelude gen 5.

3. Using high end pioneer 50w x 4 headunit. Front speakers are stock but rear using the same sony 6x9. There is absolutely no bass at all and sounds very distorted. in the civic the 6x9 was very bassy, now theres all treble.

How can this be. The only thing i can think of is the prelude runs a 6 speaker system stock ( 2 front ,2 tweeters and 2 rears ) unlike 4 speaker in civic. Also there is a small unit in the boot between the rear speakers and it says TDK on it. Apparently its an amplifier , can this be affecting it ? BTW, ive adjusted all the eq settings.

Sorry for the long post, any help would be great

are you sure its an AMP ? coz I never seen any Honda come with a factory built in AMPLIFIER in their car, so you should make sure first whether that is really an AMP . . . if so please use your RCA O/P of your Pioneer to that AMP instead of speaker O/P

Take a picture of the TDK unit and post it here using http://www.imageshack.us/

I dont think TDK make CD Changers or Amps do they? Perhaps its a High Pass Filter Crossover from a home audio system and the previous owner installed it in the car to reduce the bass since they already had a subwoofer in the rear.

If thats the case, then remove the TDK unit and reconnect the speaker wires directly together. Ensure you get the (+) and (-) connections correct. You can do this using a multimeter on the disconnected speaker wires while playing music.

Or if the TDK unit is indeed an Amp, you should be able to adjust the crossover settings (turn off HPF) and continue using it.

If you are going to run the Sony 6x9's off the Head Unit (no amp), I suggest you get 6x9's that are designed to run directly off a HU.

Running 150watt speakers of a 25watt Head Unit will sound bad and produce very little bass.

What you want are 6x9's from a respected car audio company (not sony :p) that are designed to run off a Head Unit properly. This means that you need speakers with low RMS Watt (50wRMS or less) and high Sensitivity.

For example, the 50wRMS Alpine SPS-69C3 (Type-S series) 6x9's will do nicely:

thanks for the replies guys. now that you said it i dont think its an amp anymore. But its a small black box about the size of a 4 matches box. Its tiny. and its got wires running out of them. ill post pictures wen i have time.

and as for the 6x9, they were running perfectly off my headunit in the civic. and they were cheap and very worth the money wen i installed them in the civic. no regrets there HEHE

so u know the answer now . . . so its the defogger coil

are you the one that doing the installation ? make sure you hook up the +ve and -ve speaker terminal correctly otherwise you might loose BASS, try to you use your balance first and see whether your speaker is out of phase, fade to the rear then balance the speaker all the way to the left have a listen then all the way to the right and liten it again and see whether you have a stronger BASS when you balance it either to the right or left, if so your speaker is out of phase coz you shouldnt have a stronger BASS when the balance is on the left or right, you should have it when the balnce is in the middle

wen i fad all the the rear and balance all to the left ( so that only 1 speaker is working), it sounds very bassy. So is it a power problem?
