My bro's LS turned off yesterday while driving...
it wouldnt start again... the engine turns over but wont actually start

anyone got any ideas on what could be the problem..??

distributor? ECU?

It could be car battery, spark plugs or resonator

It just died randomly?

I'd point towards the distributor....more specifically the dizzy coil, especially if there is no spark.

can be starter motor

it cant be the battery if the engine is turning over ????
hmmmmm fuel relay ???
just a guess

could be
- ignition module
- coil
- main relay
- fuel pressure ( fuel pump )
- ECU ( rare )
- timming belt snapped
- cam shaft snapped
- the kabominator
you need to do some fault finding like test for spark, take the dizzy cap off and turn her over, is the rotor button turning. can you hear the fuel pump primming ? check ecu for codes.
see how you go.

Did he do any mods prior to the problem?

dunno if this applies to an LS, but definitely sounds like a main relay problem, like it wasi n my dc2.

ECU codes 15 & 8

top dead centre position...

going to mechanic tomorrow, likely the distribtor..

rotor button turns etc
main relay replaced recently..

keep u guys posted~

i dont see how it could be the resonator
i'm guessing dizzy
check the leads for sparks, if not definitely the diz

i own an LS and had EXACTLY the same problem. Turned out the distributor coil was fraying and my dizzy cap was faulty (had a crack in it). Fixed the dizzy coil and replaced the dizzy cap and runs like a dream again.... :)
at the same time i replaced the leads and sparks just for reassurance...

its at the my mechanic now...
internals of the distributor or dist coil we think

leads and spark plugs been done recently so could be what u said gypo..

My money is on the coil :)

I'm gonna be harsh and say Timing Belt :P

Im pretty sure if it was the timing belt they would hear some scary noises while turning the car over. If the car owuld even turn over at all?

the car will turn over, probably be noisy when it starts if it starts. you wouldnt even know you bent your valves :(
dont worry FANATK this wouldnt be your problem.

if you snap a timing belt the car wont start because the cams wont turn the dizzy and therefore no spark or injector pulse. It sorta sounds like you're doing a compression test.

and the winner is...

snapped timing belt! :P

happen to anyone before?
anything bad happenned to the motor after their timing belt snappd??

ooo bugger....how is the head? I guess the valves are most likely a little bent... not good

Happened to me few weeks ago and your symptoms were exactly like mine thats why I had a guess.

I bent 2 valves in cylinder 1. But i was under full load at 7krpm.

If you weren't reving high you MIGHT get away with just changing the belt. But its highly unlikey :(

yeah i got an LS as well and it has happened to me hehe.. i was lucky though... just replaced the belt and was back on the road :)

depends how hard u were thrashing it at the time

well I had my money on the Dizzy-coil as it happened to a mate of mine with B18C EG5..

BUT since the Timing belt went, and you've prob bent the valves.. buy a B16A1 VTEC head and go LS-VTEC hahaha.. sure beats replacing your valves i nthe non-VTEC head HAHAHA

with non free running engines it doesnt matter if your revving 1k or 7k. valve timming is valve timming. valves will bend. with a free running engine youl be ok, BUT LS isnt free running :( . make sure you dont get ripped off on your repairs. did the belt snap or just come loose and jump teeth, I think you said the rotor was turning.

belt snapped is what ive been told...

its getting replaced today

lucky nothing else is damaged :D

was a compression test done to ensure the valves still seal?

....to add....are all honda engines "non-clearence" motors ?

I was reading on a nissan forum one that a few engines ( which they didnt inform us of which) have such clearence issues implemented - as to IF the timing belt should break - the valves at any stage of compression will not touch the cylinder head ? I *THINK* old hemis etc ?

add: new seals were put in as well

not all Honda engines are free running. 88 ludes defenantly arnt.
D15 civics are.
