Im having conflicting issues atm.
Im a uni studen with not much money.
I have an 89 civic manual hatch.
The engine is getting old and is beginning to blow some smoke sometimes. I have been told that the pistons and seals are most likely getting worn.
I realise to replace these it would cost a fortune for me.
I was wondering what motor would be easiest to put in2 my car, but also cheap. My cousin can put the engine in for me, so really i just need to be paying for an engine. I have a few hundred to spend.
I dont want another stock dual carb, i want something wiv a bit of grunt in it as well. Also, id be nice if the engine bolts rite in without engine mount alterations.
What are my options and how much am i looking at?
If any1 knows of any one selling an engine that would suite, pls tell me.
Thanks.

the d16 will bolt straight in, you might have to do a few little things like wire it for mpfi, maybe grab a different ecu, but nothin major. some model ed's come standard with d16.. :)

EDIT: oh, d16Y.. yeah you'll need a different ecu.. VTEC :p

Chi, u said your friend has a few d16z? Is any in running order? Like where i can just bolt straight in and drive? Does he have ecu?
U say he has crx gen 2? Does he have seats for them? Do these seats fit an 89 civic? If so, would he sell?
Any help would be great.

There were civic ecu upgrade stage 2 chips that went for 40bucks on ebay? Is that same of diff to a normal ecu? Mate, tell me where i can get a d16 for few hundred, ill grab it.

there have been full engine+gearbox+ecu+looms going on our sale forums for $600-800's. thats a d16y8 or y1, SOHC VTEC.

D16 SOHC VTEC or ZC (and it's aussie equivilent from the 2G CRX) are the easiest drop-in swaps. You can't use the ZC from a 1st gen 'teg though, the mounts are different apparently. While ECU and a wiring loom are a consideration, so is an exhaust system (ED6 exhausts are puny) and...ummm... did people forget that the aussie EDs are twin carb NOT EFi???? You need a proper EFi fuel pump and surge tank for any EFi swap.

Upgrade chips are not the ECU - you don't have an EFi ECU to swap for an upgraded one anyway - the only ECU in the ED6 is for air control.

So its ABSOLUTELY necessary to have efi fuel pump and surge tank?
I thort the engines themselves have the efi unit ON it...so really not 100% needed...?

Yes it is absolutely necessary. As to the efi unit, you thought wrong I'm afraid.

Carbys have floats which have a reservoir of fuel in them therefore there is no need for surge tank.

In simple terms you need a surge tank so your engine has a constant supply of fuel so it doesn't lean out and go KAPUT!

If you did not know this do you know enough to be considering doing an engine swap to start of with?

How much is it for a surge tank n fuel pump?
I dont really no much cauz i just got the car and i downgraded from boost...so i want bit of more power. My cuz owns shop so he can drop in take out most engines as long as its fairly bolt on. He can do gearbox n clutch as well. Just need to see how much i can get a d16 engine wiv the requirements to have it running. :o

Best bet is to PM Danny - he did a Carby to EFi swap in an EG and could prolly give you a good idea on costs.
