Car: 2004 Accord V6 Luxury with 5 speed auto, 28,000km on the clock, servicing up to date by Honda dealership

Symptom: When car is stationary and shifting gear from R to D or vice versa, there is a loud clunking noise from the auto as the gearstick is moved. It's like a loud snapping/clunking type noise. The auto seems to work fine when on the move and shifts smoothly up and down the gears. It's just the noise when shifting R to D, D to R when stationary.

Is this normal? I don't recall hearing this type of noise before but then again my window was down this time in the garage and usually the window is up.

Normal. Happens to most Honda autos.

BTW, it's time to change your auto transmission fluid. Use only Honda ATF.

Thanks.

When is the Accord V6's auto normally due for a fluid change - at the 30,000km service?

Check your service booklet. I think it's 60,000 or 70,000km, but I'd change it every 2 years.

on my previous 92 Accord, it was a sure sign one of the engine mounts needed to be replaced. Any change to R which caused a clunk and vibration meant the front mount needed to be replaced, any change to D meant the rear mount.

Not sure if that helps you.

If you go read the TSX forums in the USA, they are also complaining of the same thing, on the 2007 TSX autos! A car that is less than a year old. :)
