Number Plate guidelines
Below is the list which is used by Authorised Inspection Stations to reject number plate mountings. Keep these in mind.

Note that no mention is made about side mounted plates. However like anything the police could defect you, and you'd have to prove to the RTA it's legal (i.e. by following the belowmentioned points).

- Any part of the number plate is more than 1300mm from the ground;
- The number plates are not substantially parallel to the vehicle’s axles;
- Any number plate is obscured, for example by a towing attachment, gooseneck or tow ball;
- Any number plate cover is tinted, reflective, rounded or bubble like;
- Any number plate is not of RTA issue, is damaged or faded to the extent that the registration number is not visible;
- Characters on the number plate are not clearly visible from a distance of 20 metres at any point within an arc of 45 degrees from the surface of the number plate above or to either side of the vehicle.

no coz its on an angle. has to be parallel to the axles.

^Correct Killa From Manila.

No. plates must be in the front/rear most part of the bumper, and be perpendicular to the length of the car.

What part of what i wrote dont you get...??

It sounds pretty straight forward to me, but let me try again...

Number plates have to be;

a) At the very front or the very rear of the car
b) Imagine a line down the middle of the car so that it creates an axes of symmetry...the number plate, front and rear, must be perpendicular (on 90 degree angles) to this axes.

Where I work (Toorak) I often see 3 or more Aston Martin's. They all have plates at the front.

wonder what d reason for this is ? if there is one ...

mayb cos the cops cant see it if its that low..
so it has to be high than a certain height.
and lower than a certain height

it has to be lower than 130cm from the ground. think about it which part of a civics front bumper is higher than 1.3m...

Killa From Manila

yep just straighten it up and u shud be okay. u might get some hassles coz its not in the centre though. check with ur states regulations on that part.

My car is hardly 130 cm's high at the roof line, let alone anywhere at the bumper lol

:D :D :D

Roof mount number plate!!

I think common sense will privail here.

I think being slightly on the side (as in not parallel with the axle) is alright. Just have a plate at the front where people can see it, like the Cops.

Well look dude, ive told you, from personal experience, that this is a defectable move with your plate.
Refer to my prior posts on what is allowed.

Having it on a slight angle is a defect.

Ye i kno dat - but is it illegal to have it on d side? i only ziptied it there to see if it was okay to have it there. im obviosly goin to mount it on a straight angle properly when i do it permanently.

In NSW, so long as its straight and on the front most part of the car, you CAN have it on the side.

But check with VicRoads.

my mates have their plates on the side of their car and its fine. One even cut the plate up around so it doesn't show 'victoria - on the move' etc etc. Never been defected for it. and i think its suppose to be more than 13cm off the ground.

as long as its fully straight, so the cops can see it from both sides ect
