d16 turbo

Find one for < $1000

Turbo, can get together for 2.5k

Ends up roughly a b16 conversion price, but more power and alot more torque

change it to efi first if it isnt already...

change it to efi first if it isnt already...

Just wondering, i got a dual carb engine right? can i just change the head to the sohc efi vtec or non vtec head? is the bottom same and can reuse?
and then do all the others like ecu, wiring, fuel pump, fuel line.... etc

Get a new motor, if u lucky, i seen em for like 3-400

Ull need new fuel tank with pump and lines

yep defintaly new fuel lines, fuel pump, wiring, ecu, and drop that d16y8 or y1, turbo that sucker and u'll be flying =) strip ur rear and paint it black , while ur at it paint ur engine bay black when ur taking out the engine for the D16 conversion.

nah dude, i wanted 2 do the same but i was told by my mech that they don't fit...

if u shop around some of the wreckers...u might be able to find a good d16y8 or even get lucky and find a zc motor...they usually go for less than $500

but like what aimre said, u need a new fuel tank, fuel pump, harness, to go with the efi conversion

D16y8 FTW - forget the ZC, they are old-tech and mostly worn out. Bolt a turbo on and forget about wasting money on other mods.

Or do a K series swap - I still remember my automotiveforum days with a crazy European doing a K20 type-r swap - god it was a beast.

thanx for all the feed back.. yeah looking at some d16y8 motors.. umm what cars can i get fuel pump, fuel lines... what car i get the loom from ?? and also just stock ecu ?? from the car i get it from ??

lam.666
26-10-2007, 01:44 PM
if u can get the ecu + loom and motor as package i think thats all u need on the motor side, u then need fuel lines, tank and pump. look for an EFI civic, possibly the tank, pump and lines out of an EK, or a VTi EG might work

theres been a few d16 soch vtec conversions but no one goes through the whole process in detail

i plan to go ur way as well with the ED.. just need a good base to start on

and gearbox.. does anyone know if the stock ED gearbox mates to a d16y?

good luck and keep us all posted

 for a ED6 project.

Go aftermarket pump and swirl pot and use the existing tank. Custom lines from a fuel specialist - might as well do it properly.

ef-civic
27-10-2007, 11:11 AM
yeah will do man.. ive been told that all the D series gear box link up.. not sure but what i been told.. also i been told about just converting my original fuel tank to efi pump or something.. but yeah not sure..

Setanta
27-10-2007, 03:56 PM
Yeah all D series boxes mount up to the D series motors so you could use the existing box if you wanted.

I'm chasing up an external pump and surge tank for my EH as well as plumb-back fuel lines - will let you know the costs when I do it.

lam.666
29-10-2007, 09:59 AM
would it be cheaper to source a efi tank with pump and lines?

setanta - how much have you estimated the external pump, surge and lines to cost for the EH?

did you also do a b16a conversion to one of your previous ed's? if u did how much did it cost for the fuel setup?

Setanta
29-10-2007, 05:28 PM
Heh - my ED was going to be a ZC conversion and I had 90% of the parts sitting in the garage - then I saw a real EF9 for sale and bought it and never regretted it.

pump, surge and lines (plus professional bending/fitting of lines because I don't f*ck and skinp with fuel systems) looks to be close to 800-1K for the EH, but that's because I'm going a high-volume pump for the RB30ET. Surge will be stainless steel. Don't even ask how much the 50 liter stainless steel fuel tank I'm having custom made will cost :D

I see you an ED6 and raise you an EF9

This is the reason that I'd never do up an ED6 - EF9s are the pinnacle of perfection, no other Civic comes close.

he's only using the fuel pump from an RB30 setup, not the motor itself...

i highly doubt that its ever been done before mainly because an RB30 wouldn't fit in a 5th gen civic engine bay aswell as the motor being vertically oriented for FR platform...

It's being done more and more, you can buy mount kits through Castlemaine Rod Shop or have them set it up when you convert a HR disk-brake front end for the EH.

I have the disc-brake HR ball joint front end sitting in the garage ready to go :)

Mods to the EH will be:

HR front end running HQ Calipers and vented disks or VS commodore disks/Hopper's Stoppers calipers (will start off with HR solid rotors until the RB goes in). Currently the car runs kingpin drum brake front end.

Commodore rack and Pinion steering (currently runs recirculating ball 1920s tech steering). Modified collapsible steering column.

VL Commodore disk brake diff w/LSD and custom tailshaft.

VH44 dual circuit brake booster (I currently have no brake booster!!! )

Desertmaster triple core polished radiator. There is about 2 feet of space between grille and radiator so no cutting plus custom intercooler and thermo fans - total stealth including oil cooler.

Relocate battery to the boot to make way for:

RB30 NA with ET turbo setup running 9-12lbs boost to replace 202 Red motor

VL 5 speed floor shift to replace the trimatic 3 on column auto.

9 liter inlet manifold and VL turbo injectors.

Custom exhaust manifold to mount the turbo high up leading into a 3 inch dump/exhaust.

I can run a pod setup with no hassles as a '64 EH has NO ADRS to comply to :D

Suspension to drop 2 1/2 inches and 15 or 16 inch wheels - prolly billets.

VL turbo comp. This will give me an engineer certified car as I have fitted seatbelts (never sold as new :D )

Should be good for 200KW @ the flywheel which is my goal - it's a cruiser with economy for long range runs not a racer although I will run it at WSID when it's set up.

Options were that, a small block chev or LS1 or a ecotec/alloytec V6 out of a VS onwards (popular conversion).

Then I work on the interior and rust (previous owner was a bog-boy and I've been cutting and welding a fair bit :( ).

The strut brace in the EF9 was Spoon - designed for an EF8 but fitted to an EF9 just fine. ED6 braces didn't work on the EF.

'64 EH Holden will fit an RB30 just fine :D

RB26DET takes some massaging of panels.

man, u must need a shoe horn to fit that motor in there...

No - it's a tiny motor actually (SOHC not DOHC).

Now THIS needs a shoe-horn:

and this is what happens when you invite mates over to see it:

You just *HAVE* to get me the dimensions of that SHED dude!

I wish that was my shed... but it's in Queensland. Wish it was my car too for that matter, but mine will get there.

Surprisingly, people are dropping everything into EHs now. RBs, LS1s, 2JZs and V6s and hell, even Toyota V8s which drive the purists nuts :)

well ditching the ed build as i have come across a very cheap alternative which is already fuel injected with twin cams and is only a 1.3litre, but not a honda =\

if u, or anyone is interested i have koni red adjustables for the ED for sale, i'll do a proper post in the FS section for them

another thing u can sort out for your car if u wish to keep the original block for a while, is getting webbers for them... u dont have to upgrade fuel or ecus, just need someone to tune them

sounds like you've come across a swift gti. altho they have the same amount of power as a factory ED, its like comparing chocolate with shite (civic being on the shite end of the comparison).

anyway, check out ebay for strut braces for the ED chassis, you'll pick em up for $10 each and they work pretty darn well. just steer clear of the whole exhaust system, as its too big to ship across cheaply. coilies are a relatively cheap import too.

this is wat u should do, sell the civic and buy a real car!

close but not quite, its a nissan micra still a hatch which isnt too bad, not as much aftermarket support here like civics, swifts or pulsars but its a good car, cheap, reliable and zippy

Pretty much my take on the ED I'm afraid. While I liked them when they came out in '88, the GTi was a much better beast for the money. Compare the GTi to an EF9 though and it comes off badly :)
