View Full Version : Bleeding Brakes without Jack-stands
i am looking at replacing my BMC and proportional brake valve...
now i know i am meant to use jack stands...
but is there any way i can do this without them?
i can take the car to a mech but i rather do it all at home...
what are my options?

why would you need to put the car on stands? unless im missing something, it should be straight forward removing it

Turn the wheel for more access space between the wheel and the wheel arch to get to the bleed valve..
*Edit*
Doesn't work if you have fat tyres :D
I would never risk bleeding brakes with the wheels on - My rims are painted and it could ruin the finish. :-p

Just jack up the wheel you're bleeding, and take it off. Never work under a car not supported by jackstands (never!) but your fine to be just playing with your bleeder valve on the caliper - just don't put your hands in the jack, or under any frame rails :)
i thought you're supposed to remove the wheels ???

Best to have the car on 4 jack stands.
But can be done without, will take 10 times longer.
I have done a neighbours DC4 with 17" open style wheels with the wheels still on easy enough. Took no more than 10-15mins on the driveway without jacking.
They are fairly easy to get to the bleed nipples but obviously avoid getting brake fluid on anything painted.
*beware : brake fluid will strip your wheels paint*

Jack stands are cheap anyway. The cost for 2 pairs would be less than having to respray all 4 wheels (unless you DIY)

you could always borrow mine + all my snap on shit you know :p got em in my garage looking pretty and not getting dirty.
I only got a jack + 2 stands though :s that hasn't stopped me doing a brake flush before.
i might buy a pair of stands...
wat i am planning to do is replace my brake master cylinder and proportional valve.
what steps do i need to take?
drain all the fluid outfirst for the part replacement?
