i shouldve posted this before i posted in the wanted to buy section.
i dont know much about exhausts. but the last bit goes flange-pipe-muffler-tip.
at the region of pipe-muffler, i have a massive hole. i've taken it to a mechanic and he says he cant fix it, and i should replace it. foolishly, i didnt ask what exactly needs to be replaced...
so my questions, am i after just a muffler or an axle back? or am i completely off?
and i hope my description is good.

im guessing you need axleback piping? you can get it custom made at any exhaust shop.
however if you have a hole in your tip or muffler, you have to cut it off get a new one welded onto existing piping

If its from the flange back you might just need a muffler (buddy club, ect) as most of these jap companies consider that to be a part of the muffler
i.e. GReddy muffler = a whole lot of pipe and muffler and gaskets the lot.

axle back is from the main pipe, to the muffler (the little bend that is stuck to the muffler) cat back includes the b-pipe (pipe that runs all the way down the middle).
You prob have a hole in the muffler itself, then they can chop off the muffler and then get a new one. I think that is why your saying it needs to be replaced. You can fix it with some of the exhuast patchs for about $20 but that will last about a yr or so.
If its the muffler or pipe you need patched PM me and i'll tell you what you need to do to semi fix it for about $20 or less, as i've fixed a few (cos i was being cheap and it was my sister's car) and they have been fine for over 2yrs now. That's if you don't upgrade instead

the hole is at the joint btwn the muffler and the axle pipe then.
so i need an axle back right?
mechanic said it can't be repaired...i'm sure it can be though, but id rather just fix it properly.

will the axel back (axel back pipe + muffler + exhaust tip) from a hatch ek1 fit on a sedan ek1?
will other axel backs (from dc2r, em1, or ek4) fit on an sedan ek1?
does anyone know?

Im pretty sure the EM1 will fit sedan
And i THINK the dc2r might fit the sedan
Not sure about the hatches fitting sedan.

dc2 will fit EG
Eks - all sedan & coupes fit.
Ek hatch i beleive the axle over will fit a EM1 & sedan, but Bpipe is shorter in hatch.

over the axle piping needs to be extended from hatch to em1/ek sedan
post a pic mate.
its hard to picture your problem.
either way if the muffler itself is not damaged then an exhaust shop can just cut the section with the hole out an weld in a new one if the hole it too big to repair from welding alone.
