i want to buy some component speakers but i don't know which ones to buy
i like the alpine type-r SPR-17S component speakers, and also the rockford fosgate P1692S. what are your thoughts about these speakers? are they pretty much the same quality? i can't really decide on which because their price is almost the same

no real comment on the above speakers. but visit the forums on caraudioaustralia and you'll prolly get a better set of feedback/response on a bigger range of audio products.

Difference between the alpines and rockfords are like chalk and cheese... Personally I find the alpine to be smoother and easier on the ears whereas the RF's are much more "in you face". It really depends on what YOUR personal preferences are. No point in spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on stuff if you don't like it.
I'd throw in a few other brands to look at as well:
Morel
Hertz
Focal
MB Quart
Infinity
Boston Acoustics

thanks for the replies guys, i'll have a look at that jaycar speakers, the price is really tempting loL
one more question though, would i need an amp to power these or can i just connect them to my stock headunit?

They will connect to your stock head unit. They come with a crossover which is wired to the speaker wire off the head unit. The crossover then distributes the frequencies between the tweeter and woofer.

What is it with people and there Jaycar!!! No offence intended. I agree they are ok for the money but come on get something decent like Focal, you can buy the entry level 165a1 component speakers for around $250 and sound way better!! At least go to a Focal dealer like autobarn and have a listen b4 you buy anything, well worth the listen

they will not be running anywhere near their potential though as the h/u will not be able to provide them with enough power. they will run fine, just not as well as they could.
and although jaycar are very good for the price, with your budget (ie. 2x the cost of the jaycars) their are higher quality products around :)

yeah i would spend more if im an audiophile.. but for most normal ppl who want better sound than stock or Sony speakers.. jaycar does the trick pretty well.. i mean i got my jaycar splits for like 90bux.. worth every penny

for sure i agree, i had some jaycar coaxials and had to drive them pretty hard to get anything out of them, the 165a1's will run fine off a head unit, of course ideally off an amp tho
hey dude, not too sure about Jaycars.. but I can't recommend the MB Quart DSF 216's highly enough --> http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=15509
I have them in my car and they're crystal as. Bit costly.. but definately worth the pricetag I can assure u ;)

lolz bit costly hacs?! i thought i gave you a good deal on em :P
dmarc: ive heard type-r's, they have a smoothish and more laid-back sound and have good midbass 'punch/kick'. alot better than type-s's, but we're not comparing them here.. the type-r's are decent splits for the price.
ive listened to most splits in the RF range and i cant remember if i heard the P1692S specifically, but what i got from all of RF's range was 'shrill' sounds - or 'in your face' like freaki3 said. wasnt for me.. but that might be up your alley.
in the end, if the price is the same then just go with the ones u like the sound of.. not what we tell you to like.
whats your max budget?? will you be amping whichever splits you choose?? are you gonna go all out to them installed properly (sealed & deadened doors, extensive tuning, angling & postioning of the tweets/mids, etc) to get the most potential out of them or are you just looking for something to 'make noise'??

neither speaker is "better" - it is all personal preference...
i've had both RF and Alpine splits.. i can't remember the model numbers, i believe they were pretty much entry level (Fnx? and Type S).. the Alpine had sharper highs and sounded better in my opinion. the RF's were bassy and slightly dull..
In my opinion i recommend matching the RMS to the power output - the RF's had a higher RMS rating, so they could have been running underpowered, whereas the Alpines were probably running in their optimum power band, hence sounded better...
with that said - most of these speakers can take more than their rated power - just be sensible with the gains and you will get awesome sound
