Has anyone replaced a broken bolt that holds the exhaust manifold on the block and tell how it is done?

If you are in luck, some of the body of the stud will still be clear of the face metal.
If so, you stand a chance of removing it with a deft hand & a pair of vice grips.
If it's snapped level with the face metal, things are tougher but not lost.
Next step is to try Blue steel & a small hammer ;)
If it cannot be gently taped around using a small piece of sharpened "Blue-steel" then, you'll need to drill the centre & then use an "easy-out".
In inexperienced hands, these tools are better known as easy-f**k.
(If you use one, break it inside the broken stud, you'll know why :p)

Once the remainder of the broken stud is removed, the new stud is wound in.

If you're in doubt & happy to pay someone, most capitol cities have mobile thread repair guys who specialise in this sort of thing.
Generally you're looking at a $60 call out fee + $X per broken stud or thread repaired.
They can be found in Yellow pages usually.
Hope that helps...
Cheers

Call the stud man, otherwise you could make more problems that you actually solve

OK, it's been a while since I've seen Zoolander but I don't think I'll have to resort to Blue Steel. The bolt is broken off at the level of the manifold so I think it will be relatively easy to undo (just hope the manifold will come off ok)...but does it just unscrew anticlockwise out of the block?

I'd pay for the $60 call out fee and parts, because a good easy-out is already $10-15. When you factor in the cost of f**king it up further, $60++ is nothing. LOL

This happened to me once, and I just paid for the guy to come out and fix it for me, much quicker and easier.
