What is this? and what does it do?

i did a search and it came up with something about intake cams?(improves the mid range torque, does this come at a sacrifice of anything else?)

has anyone had this done and is it worth it?

Cheers

i think what your trying to say is that someone told you that changing your camshafts can improve your midrange torque.read the below link, it shows how the camshaft works in an engine and it will probably show you what happens when you upgrade them to larger units.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camshaft

changing camshafts comes at a sacrifice of money, and when you get more extreme, pleasant drive ability is lost

thanks for the info and help :)

i dont actually mean changing the "cam" itself.. but rather adjust the timing of it..
does anyone know how it works? or how they do it? is it worth it etc?

Cheers thanks for that...
so in what circumstances would it be "advantageous" to have this done? as in what mods would make it "good"?

is it just more torque in the lower end?

Its one of those things you will really need a dyno to see the benefit of.

I recently had the experience of some mechanic of doing a poor job of fitting a timing belt on my r33 gtst. So poor was the job in fact, the successfully managed to get both cams a tooth out! This made it ping like no other because the cas is driven off the exhaust cam. Because I did not know that the cam timing was a tooth out readjusted ignition timing back to standard.

Anyway, long story short the cam timing ended up a tooth out (advanced). The car would have a huge hump of torque up to 5000rpm but wouldnt rev any more than that. It was great between 3000-5000rpm, but absolute crap everyone else. Thats really an extreme case, but yes it can make a difference but its one of those things you might consider looking for when you have already done a lot of work and have a dyno where you can measure the gains and losses.

do you mean adjusting by adding cam gears to change your intake and exhaust timing?
I know that when i added cam gears it gave me more mid-end torque that i could feel. Didn't seem to do anything to top end, but have been told that you sacrifice abit of topend. The adjustment is meant to move your power band to a more usable area so that you get better pickup where you want or need it. Was worth the mod considering they dialed it in for free cos i was changing my timing belt. Goto someone who knows what they are doing. I went to Hanny's in sydney and they did a great job
