isnt navman or tomtom device start as low as $399 these days? if so why bother with unknown brand/mapping software?

also, I'm pretty sure that if the screen displays anything other than driving assitance (navigation) it would be illegal... someone correct me if I'm wrong

all these apart, I think its a cheap generic PDA with custom navigation software in it. I've seen on forums that people managed to get a windows mobile running on these device and add more functions such as calendar, office mobile, etc like a normal PDA...

The chipset is fine... but with no common OS like WM5/6 and no map updates this gps is pretty retarded. Mate you're better off getting something else. Map updates are pretty important.

Also if you have something running windows mobile you can chose between various mapping software if you find you don't like NavTeq maps.

I have a Mio P350 and works like a charm - it runs windows mobile and I installed TomTom on it... it also uses the SirFIII chipset. I'm also getting a nokia n95 that has gps built in to it - but not as reliable as the P350.

also by "Route66" it is probably using AGD66 mapping projections.. which means it won't be accurate.

Get an Aussie brand one that projects coordinates at GDA94 which is the current Australian standard. trust me.. take it from someone who works with GIS (Geospatial Information Systems)

A more sensitive receiver is more likely to receive data quicker than a less sensitive receiver especially when in a noisy areas such as rain forests. That is what separates the expensive navigators from the rest. So i would be abit cautious of what you are bidding on. It may lag that is why people prefer to buy a brand they can trust and know if anything breaks down they can get it fixed with minimum ease.

why would you waste money on ebay, what if it stuffs up? :D

Considering brand new Tomtom One cost $399aud, I'd just buy that. At least you get a reputable well known GPS system which works. Sure it can't do all the special features like play mp3s or watch movies, etc... but if you want a satnav for the purpose of navigating reliably, I'd go with that option.
