*URGENT* burst coolant hose *HELP*!

So, was driving to work this morning, down the motorway. came to the end and stopped at the lights, when i noticed steam coming from under the bonnet.

got to work, opened up the bonnet, and coolant was shooting out of a hose connecting to the intake manifold. it looked like there was just a pin hole crack in the hose.

now, i work about 50 minutes away from home, 30minutes of which is highway driving, so i need some sort of bandaid measure to at least get me home. i'll buy a replacement hose tomorrow.

please help. can i apply liquid gasket over the top? or plumbers tape? just something to get me home.

cut the hose after the leak and just reconnect if it is long enough still to do so

the above is the best way of doing it.. in the absense of anyhting else try and slap some tape on it but you're going to have to make sure the hose is completely dry and clean or it wont stick, especially if coolant has been all over it during the leak period. get some heavy duty electrical or ducting tape and itll get you home.

Are there no car part shops around you can duck out too at lunchtime?

Also, get some empty bottles and fill them up with wtaer just in case you need to refil

^^yeh i done that in my old camry a few years ago, worked a treat, give it a go if the hose is long enough.

if not, ive got a leak in my skyline radiator hose at the moment, ive just put duct tape around it (a few layres) as a temporary fix till the new hose comes in on monday. its been holding since tuesday so that should work. just try not to rev the engine out to much as this creates more pressure in your system. i have a 100km round trip to and from work every day of which 90km's is highway driving.

take a roll of duct tape with you on the way home just incase it does start leaking again. i know its dodgy but it works as long as the hole isn't too big

There's a supercheap auto, but i'm not exactly in the right clothes to do a hose change... and i'm not 100% sure that the hose will be long enough. plus, if i disconnect the hose to cut it, won't that spew coolant everywhere?

I think i'll have to go the duct tape. the hole seems to be quite small, and the spray that came out of the hose was very thin. but if i can't get a new hose straight away, i'll cut it and yeah, see how we go then.

There's a supercheapauto around the corner, but i'd rather not build up the heat, pressure and mess from the drive. i'll go across the road to coles and buy a bunch of duct tape and maybe a big container of water.

are there standard hoses available? or should does each hose have a specific model number etc? from what i can tell, it was a U shaped hose.

they are coded, and can be VERY expensive, so be prepared for it! Sometime you wont be able to find the part from a normal auto parts shop... see how you go

distilled water is usually used for radiators, not just off the shelf spring water as that contains impurities which may corrode the internals of the radiator.

well that sucks. how can i find the code for the pipe?

Time to get an aftermarket hose set. I suggest SAMCO or if you want cheaper ones go to ebay :thumbsup:

Or as mentioned you can get an artermarket set and replace them all

at supercheap and other parts stores they usually order it in for you if they dont have it in stock. may take upto 3 days though

so, lunch time is finished, and just in time.

managed to pull off what was recommended, cut the pipe behind the crack and whacked it back on. should last me a bit longer, there's a whole load of rust in the pipe, so i think an aftermarket set mite be necessary anyway.
