I've scoured the forums with no luck..

but has the d16y1 SOHC vtec motor ever been put into a 1st gen crx, or 3rd gen civic (84-87)?

Not really - as the amount of work required in terms of install and wiring is as much as a B16A or B18C so people choose to install those motors over a D16Y1.

agreed^ besides... the a8 / zc (twin cam) have more power stock then a y1.. although not much aftermarket support... but if doing an engine conversion may as well go a B

fair enough...
but lets say from a cost effective point of view, cos i'm not going to be chasing big power, just want something to get me by over the next couple of years.

b16a are generally more expensive and probably rarer i imagine.
d16a8/zc's are getting harder to get with a good no. of k's on them.

what sort of work would need to be looked at for an install. surely both being d series, the blocks wouldn't differ that much. and if a d16y fits into an eg, and a zc fits into an eg without too much issue, then wouldn't the d16y and zc be fairly interchangeable?
