View Full Version : Howling Engine Noise.

My car (96 crx/delsol/eg2) is making a descending howling noise when I down gear. Normally the higher RPM (noticeable at 1.5-3) the louder and it is more noticeable in 2nd gear.
When I 'REVMATCH' successfully (never had I engaged while over reved) the howling noise is not present, though it is when you would normally down gear/engine brake.

Anyone have any ideas on what it could be. Had the car for almost a year and havent noticed it until now. Not really sure if its normal, please advise if possible.

RIFS.

If the noise is that noticeable it is likely to be 1 of a few things

Gearbox related
When stationary with car running is the noise noticeable? if so does it go away when you put the clutch in?

Flywheel/Clutch Related
How long has the clutch been in for? did you get the flywheel machined? where all the bolts torqued to the right spec? sometimes the bolts can come loose

Engine mounts
Get a pry bar and lift your engine as to relieve pressure on the engine mounts, inspect the mounts for cracks or see if there touching something they shouldn't be

I hope this shed some light on your problem

jesus christ, i wouldnt go anywhere near my car with a pry bar, especially the motor...

If you go anywhere near your motor with a pry bar... PLEASE be careful what you pry against... if you can, use a jack as a mechanic would not a pry bar... PLEASE be careful who's advice you listen to on here

I have never seen a mechanic use anything other than a pry bar! but thats just me, a jack would be a better idea, but i would assume if he was to use a pry bar he would have enough intelligence and common sense to do it properly and not damage his car.

fly wheel has been machined. clutch is erms. i think 6-7 months old. noise is not present on a cold start after 10-15 minutes of driving it is present. the noise is present the moment i engage the gear.

EDIT:

Thank you all for your responses =]

Dont assume anything ffs... your not showing him one on one what to do, it doesnt sound like you even know what to do, as you've only seen someone do it...

Maybe you'd stop accumulating red dots if you dont offer advice unless you know exactly what you are talking about

maybe if i didn't have a red spot you would be agreeing with me and trying to start an online argument!!!

If the sound is there as soon as you put it in gear it may be your Gearbox, if at a stand still with engine running does it grind a bit into reverse? this will tell you if the shaft is turning or not, if its not turning you may have a box problem,

by the sounds of it it would most likely be your clutch though.

I hope i have helped and i don't want to lead anyone down the wrong track, i just want open up a few possibility's and hopefully teach a few people on the way

I agree with yellow-dc2.

How do you think you check your suspension bushings and ball joints??
You use a jack to put load on a balljoint and use a prybar.

Id use a prybar on mine. Id just use it carefully and place something in the bay to lever off so it wouldnt damage anything...

I dont think this is the problem with the guys car though.. But his method for the problem he mentioned is a way of testing bushings and would work...
