My car was doing this on the way to work today. If I give it just a little bit of gas it's ok,but if I give it any more than that it was studdering/spluttering.I check under the hood for anything that may have come off but all looks like it's in it's place.Any ideas anyone?

you haven't by any chance cleaned your engine bay recently have you? (degrease and washed off with water). I had a mate who gave his engine a degrease and rinsed it with water and in the process the water entered into the spark plugs.
to resolve the issue he took out the plugs and dried everything off and it was all good again.

Yeah happened to my Civic as well, water entered the spark plug wells and caused high rev shorting.
Could also be bad spark plugs, or spark plug cables with too much resistance, or a Distributor problem.

just get water dispursant and spray it down your spark plug holes
and put yor leads back and give it a whirl

So just suddenly happen? Don't think it'll be spark plugs.
Sounds electrical. Do a ECU check see if any code/s comes up.

Perhaps water found its way ontop of the engine and entered the spark plug wells during the storms, but have since dried up ftw

That is sooo unlikely!

Test the leads. They could be earthing out here and there. Quite often they arc out intermitently at the beginning. Test it out with an ohm metre.

It happened on the hot day. Check the Main PGMFI Relay and fix it as following DIY http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31796

I'd say relay could be worth checking. I ordered a new one from Honbits. Fixed my probs :D

Nice.I just took mine out, looks 11 years old.I ordered a new one from Honda.$108.Pick up tomorrow.Lets hope that's what it is.
Here's the old one:

Hard to get it focused... but the 2 on each side looks like it's been leaking a bit.

Come to think of it my aerial wouldn't go down yesterday and I could hear a strange noise exactly where the relay was all day too.I reckon a new one is gonna fix my woes.
if that doesn't work, you could have a exposed wire somewhere shorting onto the metal, which in turn will eventually blow a fuse i reckon, alternatively could be your fuel pump if you ran low on fuel recently could of burnt it, or the wiring, should check that out. If you park your car outside as well could be condensation

108? Is that straight from Honda? You should of tried to source a 2nd hand one from somewhere. That shit's expensive!

Yeah,I know it's expensive (strait from Honda).I guess it's just one of those things I want to buy new, supacheap, autobarn, global spares didn't stock them.
I really hope it's this and not a wire shorting out somewhere.

Swapped the relay, nothing.I'm will swap the external MSD coil next...
beeza
22-01-2008, 03:31 PM
Swapped the coil,no luck.Did a compression test:
1.100
2.175
3.100
4.175
The car is at my mechanics,he is going to take off the valve cover and check the valve clearance.Hopefully the valves aren't f**ked in cylinders 1 & 3...

checked the dizzy man?
dizzys are pretty common to fail on most older hondas
i also had similar symptoms on my old d16a8, turned out it was the dizzy.
beeza
22-01-2008, 04:44 PM
What part of the dizzy did the problem come from?
panda[cRx]
22-01-2008, 04:51 PM
in most cases its the coil or something along those lines, usually it just needs a replacement sub assembly (which isnt cheap, but there are cheaper aftermarket options such as 'petroject')
if you find it is the dizzy i wouldnt put a 2nd hand one on as you could have the same problem a few months down the track
beeza
22-01-2008, 04:56 PM
Thanks Panda,I'll check out 'petroject'.I'm runnin' the MSD set up with an external coil,so I replaced that but no honey.

petroject is just an oem style replacement, but cheaper than genuine honda.
i'd hope it isnt your dizzy if you have already replaced it, but yeh i've seen the same symptoms in other cars and it has been the dizzy. if you are that unsure it may pay to have it checked out
beeza
22-01-2008, 05:05 PM
Ah cool that's what petroject is.I haven't replaced the dizzy. It's at my mechanics now,he will find the problem,he's a very good mechanic,I just hope it's something cheap,offcoarse...

Update:Tappets have been adjusted and compression is back to 175 accross all 4 cylinders but no start.I will be going to my mechanics today.I will try it by unplugging the MSD box and just running the external coil but the car still sparks so I doubt it that but it's worth a try.My mechanic is just eliminating things at the moment. We will prevail,oh yes we will prevail :)
