Hi, I'm in Victoria. Did some damage to my front bar after silly n00b error of not looking forward when parking. There are various sections of the left side of my front bar that has had the paint "scraped off". Nothing severe, but a very very small amount of the polyurethane itself may also have been scraped off. My rear bar has a "crack in it". I recall a fellow Euro driver who saw someone in Box Hill? How much damage will this do to my hip pocket?

the front damage wil seriously buff right off, with the help of claybar. ive seenw orse damage on my mums quarter panel and after 30minutes with polish then claybar it was 100% completely removed. u couldnt tell any depressions in the fibreglass/plastic/whatever the **** the quarter was made of

Thanks for quick reply. Buff/claybar isn't DIY is it? I'm so pissed right now *grrr*

it is DIY, its alot of labour and elbow grease but youll save yourself a small chunk off the bill. that hole in the back of your bumper bar he'll either replace it or put putty. id just source a spare bumper get him to respray it put it on and then buff out your front bar damage. youll save a lot

I'm a real noob, how hard is it to buff out and how will I get the original paint back on? Also with the rear, Euros aren't common at wreckers and I don't want to pay 500 or whatever it is for a new one. Putty looks the go.
Anyway, any recommendations for panel beaters. I'm uni student, so I'm not exactly ballin'.

do a search for claybarring it involves spraying a lubricant (ie. a detailer) then just rubbing with a clay bar on the effected area, upkeeping lubricating and swapping sides where possible. then when its done you polish
youll find that the original paint is still there, i know it sounds ridiculous but i had some scruff marks on my mums panel and i thought they where scratches, they buffed off. youd be surprised whats really a scratch and whats really a scuff mark. paints fairly durable itll stick on well
and im not sure where u can source a cheap bumper, i guess you can putty fill it urself and then sand it all back and get the spraypainter to blend spray where the putty is/youve sanded back

I'd rather not touch it myself, just because I know I'll probably make things worse. Trying to find some online quotes now. Thanks for the help

A friend suggests Cambridge Motors in Box Hill. Anyone had experience with them?

I am a firm beleiver in getting what you pay for. Is there a big margin in quality vs price?

well i never had used DT Panels before...some people say they're cheap and have a good work quality...but i can definitely recommend Auswide...used them once, and work quality is top although sometimes they're on the expensive side...or u can try Jetspeed in Clayton, i'm going to spray my car there;)

i'm near box hill
i'm getting my bumper resprayed by a person i know, hes a backyard guy.
even though i say backyard guy, doesn't mean hes no good, he does this for a living.
i get my bumper back on Friday, should be in perfect nick.
pm me if you want a number.
EDIT, i took the rear bumper off myself and all the other stuff. gave him the bumper only., no light surrounds etc.
$150 if i leave my car wiyh him and 140 he picked up my bumper and drop it back to me

I'm finding panel shops to be more expensive then I initially thought. I'm now getting some quotes from some of the bigger franchise companies (they reckon they are half the price of panel shop)

Was quoted $330 to fix what you see in the two pictures. Decent price IMO.

i reckon my guy can do it cheaper.
got my bumper back, only problem was that he couldn't buff it properly cos i only gave him the bumper.
he said it needed to be sturdy on the car to buff properly

So it was a straight respray? Thing is they are going to have to putty up the rear on mine.

i reversed into something, cos it was misty in the morning one time, bumper was dented, had to bog it up and respray.
looks pretty good considering it wasn't buffed properly

bumper is probs easier to fix then crack I would think.
so ratted because its at the end of the fat bar behind it, and so pressure on that area sees one part supported by the bar behind it and the other with nothing behind it, of course resulting in a tear.

tears are ****ed because you cant knock it back. if you bog that crack i dunno what wil support it from behind, maybe bog it too the backing

It's not as if it has has the middle bit of the tear actually removed though. It's more like split in half and one half was moved behind the other. As you can see in the pic, the two halves are still in contact but yeah, waiting on some more quotes and ill ask what they plan to do.
I'm making sure that whoever I get to do it, I don't let them go till I go over it with a hawks eye. Nothing worse than letting them go then finding missed spots.

Oh k, both frount and rear bumpers need to be sanded back and resprayed. the rear bumper needs to be plastic welded from in side the bumper (the part you cant see). leave it for the professionals i.e pannel beaters and spray painters, i would roughly say maby $400.
btw im a spray painter and i know what im talking about

Ok, if I went to one of those mobile franchises, what would they do differently?

I rang the guy up, he said he would plastic weld the crack and respray the front. If I don't like the job, I don't let him go. I don't see any problems.
