I have a 96 EK1 Civic Sedan d16y4 with an Automatic Transmission and I'm wanting to know what Automatic Transmission would be a good upgrade for this. i.e Better gear ratio's.

i dont know of any "performance" automatic gearbox's. honda just dont make them, all type Rs, VTi-Rs are manual. and they're performance-range honda

I have a feeling I read somewhere the y8 is compatable and it's gears are closer ratio'ed...

perhaps the VTi model is a slight increase but like i said nothing fantastic. its not like sticking a type R gbox on a b16 or b18 kinda difference

i wouldnt touch a cvt from the vti. they are what was also in the hrv's (which have a history of start clutch failure amongst other things)

Hey Beeza,

probably need to point out there are two different types of auto transmission designs out there.

Apologies if you're already aware of this.

1) The regular type, with three or four sets of gears and (sometimes) the lockup unit in the torque converter.

And two:

2) The CVT, which stand for constantly variable transmission. This uses a strong flexible steel band between two pulleys which change their effective diameter.

It sounds like you already have 1), but just in case avoid 2) at all costs.

> would rather eat a steaming bucket of wet shit then drive an automatic

Erm. No, never, not a chance.

Besides, there are some good autos out there.

There's more than one drag strip record been set with a turbo 400, Powerglide
and Lenco.

Just not in a Honda.

> autos have a thing called clutch packs

In type 1) autos, the clutch packs are much smaller than a manual clutch and are wet clutches, sitting in transmission fluid.

The ECU switches solenoids causing hydraulic fluid to flow into and out of different chambers to engage different clutch packs, in turn engaging different gears.

What typically happens is that these clutches slip, get hot, and burn up.

The slipping is what makes auto trannies smooth and a certain amount is designed in to make for a comfortable ride.

Nick.
