View Full Version : Dilemma - SRI choice!

I'm at a loss to which one to buy. My options are currently,

1. Apexi Power Intake Filter Kit $200
* Air Filter
* Gaskets
* Bolts
* Adapter

2. Simota Air Intake System $130
* Air Filter and all the pipework

What essentially is making me consider the Simota over the Apexi is the question of getting a better pipework = improvements or is it just there to be more aesthetically pleasing?. As the Apexi system seems to be a general bolt on to the end of the stock pipework.
Please help a noobie out =)

Cheers

can you justify $70 for no more than an additional ~2wkw gain if at all?

To be honest, I'm not sure what you are suggesting here as from what I have heard, SRI's won't give much of a performance gain and thus maybe a ~2kw gain is quite alot and justifiable? Or are you suggesting that $70 is too much to be paying?

If you are just getting an SRI... get an eBay kit.. their cheaper and do the same thing... if it was a CAI then its slightly a different story.

Their Mandrel bent aluminium... doesn't transfer heat like steel..

how much of power you do get is then dependent more on the filter.

those metal mesh ones flow A LOT of air and give plenty of induction noise... trade-off is filtering ability.... etc....

Ok cheers!

Have you or anyone got any suggestions on where ( or reliable ebayer) to purchase a cost effective SRI kit?

I'm sure you can find them cheaper as just an SRI but this is a CAI i bought for my GFs DC4:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=008&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=180177136070&rd=1

currently setup as a CAI, but it's 2 piece, can use it as an SRI

Another question.

With the simota intake kit. Do you use the stock airbox to cover the filter or not?

I'm not sure which Simota intake you are referring to but most of there intakes are ram pod style which requires the factory air box to be removed so the pod filter / intake pipe can sit in its place. I doubt that you will be able to use your air box cover as a heat shield (thats what i gather your trying to do).

Use a thin sheet of metal etc

Gives me the worry of heatsoaks :S
DIY heatshield time?

Exactly... Have a peek at this mate, it should answer your questions.

Although this is on an Accord Euro the same principle applies.

you know what guys, despite the factory rubber intake hose being ribbed and known to cause turbulance.. it's bigger than most CAI/SRI pipes.

It is almost pointless to route the aluminium pipe back into the factory airbox if you want to keep it.

If you do, you may as well get just the SRI made for cheaper and connect it upto the stock DC pod style filter or aftermarket one then put it in the box.

Q3

Is it necessary to reset the ECU after installation or is a 98DC4 smart enough to learn the new air/fuel ratios?

Your DC4 will run fine without resetting the ECU, but that said it won't hurt doing so anyway.

Is the process to reset by battery just removing the negative from the battery or both + and -?

Need a little clarification.

Oh and if its fine maybe I won't do it :p

Just remove the negative terminal for 30 secs. Trade off is that the radio and clock will have to be set again.

You can buy a heat shield at your local Auto 1 which sits half way around the top of the filter - keeps the cops away too. It comes chrome, but just paint it heatproof black!

Removing the '-' terminal will reset by battery. Do leave it disconnected for 3-5 minutes so that it gets rid of the remaining voltages as well.
