hi there,

i had my ek1 changed oil 2000 kms ago. when i checked the oil level in the dipstick, it had gone down from the top hole to the middle (in between the two holes). That's the oil level when the car is completely cold.

i don't know what's caused the oil level to go down. is that because i fang the engine? summer heat? oil viscosity? or something else?

The engine has done 120,000 kms and using Honda FEO 10w30. I was told by the shop from where i bought the oil that it's the only viscosity FEO has.

Is it ok to top-up the oil up to the top hole?

Thanks in anticipation!

did you check while the car is on a slant?

cause thats what happend to me.. i freakd out cause i thought i had no oil left..

and plus it was cold too lol

oh .. and make sure that the dipstick is all the way down so it catches the correct oil level etc etc

- check your spark plug electrodes to see if your burning oil
- check plug area for leaks as there is a gasket between head/block for every plug hole that sometimes leaks

- don't fang it too much especially when its hot. I found my catch can catches more oil on:
- Hot Days
- Frequent >6krpm-fuel cut fangs
- when i had 5w30 instead of FEO

Time to replace your PCV valve.

What's the theory behind that aaronng?? Stuck open?

:p was that for me or OP??

considering the price of a new one from honda i decided to install the catchcan.. but mine seems fine to function correctly as a one way... unless the spring tension is supposed to be tight?

Old PCV valves have weakened springs and open up at lower crankcase pressures. Hence you get more than necessary oil vapour going into your intake manifold and getting burnt.

The PCV system is for releasing combustion gases that somehow manage to get into the crankcase via blowby or other methods. It's not actually meant to release your engine oil or engine oil vapour.

That was for the OP. But if you are finding that you are catching a lot of oil (how many ml per 100km so far?), then you might as well get it replaced. It depends if the price of the PCV outweighs having to keep topping up your oil.

BTW, FEO is 10w-30 and should be of similar viscosity to the 5w-30 oil when at operating temperatures on a hot day.

thanks will get the pcv replaced..is that a hard job?

is it ok to use FEO in summer because it only has a viscosity of 10w30?

5min job.

yep 5min job if you have small hands or decent long pliers to pull it up.

FEO is fine... he was replying to my post about hot days i think... because of the "30" in 5w30 & 10w30 , they have the same 'hot viscosity'

Yes, FEO is fine. Your engine is meant to use 10w-30. You can use 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40 as well if you want to test if you reduce oil consumption that way. But if it was the PCV valve's fault, you'd still get oil consumption even with 10w-40.

Honda Spare Parts dept.... there are no generics available... it's around $60 lol

eBay USA has some if you could be bothered waiting for delivery.... just make sure you get the right one.. i noticed theres a straight and L shaped variant for the B series..

depends on your engine... it's a plug you just pull off
