Hey guys
OK here's the rundown.... my engine is currently on 190,000km (D16Y1) and it's due for a timing belt change. I was also thinking of going turbo but the problem is my rings are gone, so I'll need to do a rebuild. Is it true that during the rebuild the mechanic can just change over the timing belt with ease? Therefore saving me hundreds of dollars from a service @ the Honda dealers? Been quoted by LukeZen that the rebuild will cost roughly $1200. OUCH!
Or should i scrap the whole thing and just get an engine transplant instead? (B18C VTi-R)? Any advice would be appreciated....

thats a lot of money to spend rebuilding a SOHC motor. But it should be like new when its done.
If you dont mind the concpet of doing a motor swap, maybe get a B16 or B18, but then that involves money also...

or even spending a bit more with building a stronger bottom end
for boost :D
go the b18c if u got the money, boost it too. But only if ur car is in good condition and dosnt look like a multi rolled commodore rust bucket.

Nah my car looks alrite, yeah I was thinking that's a lot of money to rebuild the motor! The D16Y1 is probably not even worth that much!
D16Y1 rebuild = $1200
Turbo Kit = $4000
B18C (VTi-R) = roughly $4500
Works out roughly the same.... but boost will be quicker

If your on a tight budget I would recommend considering a B18B engine swap, then turbo if its needed.

mate boost the car first and then rebuild later if needed.
$1,200 is cheap for a rebuild. If you buy a b18c there is no guarantee that it will not need a rebuild shortly after. At least you know your D series will be quicker than the B18c
Is 4500 cheap for the b18c vtir? I thought they were more like 7000? Any way man id go boost

Hmmm isn't that the price of the Type R? I'm sure B18C VTi-R aren't worth that much because Fatboyz was selling one for roughly $4500

b18c buddy may be a little slower but it will be more reliable. Will probably be better for insurance purposes as well

rebuild would require hoisting the engine.
hence timing belt will be done easily.
i think thats the whole point of this thread.

Yeah that is one of the points! And i doubt i'll get charged extra for doing the timing belt while the engine is out right?

dont forget things like labour, timing belt, probably wanna do clutch and fly at the same time etc etc.

Yeah that's what i'm thinking. Because i already did clutch & flywheel on my D16Y1 so it's prob worth keeping it. Does anyone know how much it is for a full service with Honda to change the timing belt? Cause if it's a few hundred bucks different i might as well get a rebuild!

They will have to take the timing belt off in order to take the head off the bottom end when doing the rebuild. So if they try to charge you extra (labour) to fit the new belt i'd be laughing at them.
New belt should be around the $100 mark. My gates belt and bearing kit was only $97.
It would be wise to do the belt tensioner bearing and water pump at the same time. You most likely will get charged some labour for fitting a new water pump.

Definately AKmotorworks is the right way to go. I have personally seen and driven their work and i have zero qualms whatsover. Andy is a damn good mechanic/tuner.
