View Full Version : which flywheel?
hey guys, just wondering if people have personally experienced different on their cars. all the popular jap brands seem to have it around the same weight from spoon 4.2kg to orc 3.8kg. how much difference would that make? would it be less torquey with and orc fly compared to spoon?

3.8Kg is not neccesarily lighter than the 4.2Kg if that makes sense?? it depends where on the flywheel they lightened it (generally they put heaps of those holes just before the teeth).
Ask the manufacturer/seller what the rotational mass/weight is as this part is highly dependent on inertia.
I have seen a few different brand benchmarks before on other cars... i'm sure it is worth searching on the net considering how abundant Honda parts are...
I remember a rotational test where the PAR engineering flywheel at 4.2Kg had the same rotational mass as a JUN 3.8Kg... and half the price....

i use the Toda one, preoven performance and a very nice part

i have had a TODA flywheel , and now have a EXEDY flywheel. Both same weight but one was half the price. Same thing IMO.
Just dont machine down a stock flywheel !

no. stock to a exedy flywheel. i have had TODA in a similar setup in years gone past. Go figure !
Any other flywheel recommendation's ?

Any other flywheel recommendation's ?
Us flywheels. Competition clutch, RPS, Clutchmasters. etc.
-Alloy flywheels.
-Steel flywheels for more aggresssive material center plates. My one weighs 3.8kgs (steel).
-Alloy flywheels with replaceable steel insert center plate face (see photo).

They are also cheaper to get them direct from the Us delivered to your door.
Win win win....

I dont see the replacement inserts to be a good options..
you will end up with more attachable parts making it more prone to breakage. And by the looks of it you will have less friction area. You will also need to buy a new steel part in the future as its non-machinable
i guess the reason i started this thread is because i wanna see if a 'lighter' flywheel like orc will make the car less torquey then a spoon one which claims 4.2 was the optimum weight without losing out on the torque line

start getting below 4kg's and it starts to get hard to daily drive :S

Spoon flywheel is good. I used it to combo with Exedy HD clutch. Works well and gd acceleration improvement from stock. Definitely worth investing. IMO, it gives u as much gain in acceleration as a catback exhaust would. So for $400+(Spoon), It will be worthwhile to get a proven and high quality flywheel.

ORC flywheel/clutch combo? or just flywheel?
If clutch kit go with for ORC.

They are properly and surely fastened in. It will not let go. They far outlive the clutch itself.
A very marginly less friction area yes, but thats effectively what you do when you go into puck center plates, so its more of the same. The area will not make a difference with a full face plate.
Thats the whole idea of the inserts is to replace them. You have a light alloy flywheel and a more durable and tough steel insert.
If you want a clutch/fly. Orc clutch is very good.

A lighter flywheels Pros definatly outweigh the Cons. Its an excellent mod. This is one small mod that I could actually feel the difference.

i was thinking either and orc kit, or a spoon fly/exedy kit

ORC kit will be much better. Its a kit they made so it'll better then mixing combo's around. They might of balance it too.

i would go ORC if i were you, its a nice package.
ive got fidanza 3.8kg flywheel and exedy clutch and its very nice, best mod ive done to the car, the revs are so nice and keep pulling and also the car is very responsive.
only bummer is i need to be more accurate with getting off the line from a stop, but other that that a light flywheel is a great mod :)

b16a's are torqueless anyway.. You would want to make it more revvy if you know what i mean.
Get the single plate ORC clutch and flywheel combo. If your tight on budget get the fidanza ones fro mthe states. There like only 250 ish landed

+1 for the Fidanza. They're really good for the price you pay. You could have a stage 1 clutch kit and flywheel shipped here for 450AU give or take. Minus the clutch kit and it's...say...200 bux lol
