by that i think it means that the vehicle was complianced in '08.. correct me if im wrong but for it to 'pass' compliance it has to meet australian (or what ever country its being imported to) safety and emission standards.

its meets the requires for the 2008 year. They change certain compliance requirements each year. This in relation to all EPA and RTA standards

It basically means its an MY08 model (Manufacturer year 2008)

so the compliance year can be different to what year model of the car, like 07 complianced and 08 honda civic

a "MY08" car can be manufactured in "FY2007" after September every year.

Wow, so many different answers. Here's the correct one. Compliance is when duties have ben paid and the vehicle has been released for Australian usage. Patrick Autocare and Toll Transport are the companies responsible for compliance of vehicles. There are certain requirements such as safety, emissions and ADR equipment such as child restrains. The compliance plate is only fitted at date of duty payment to the Federal Government. MY has no relevance to compliance of a vehicle. There is no determination of MY thanks to date. The S2000 ran the same MY for 3 years consecutively. It's essentailly when a model change happens in the factory. Volkswagen change MYs depending on factory production.

for some slooooooow moving imported cars, such as something very expensive that hardly anyone one buys eg Peugeot 607, Citroen C6, the car is often build in say 2006 and sits in a holding yard for a year or two or more....And when the car is bought by some punter and car gets a 2007 or 2008 comp plate fixed to the car prior to sale.

This scenerio applies only to car in bond at the distributors prior to 1st registration, cars used as demos at dealers must have comp plate affixed to car.

never buy or let anyone else tell you that everyone goes by the compliance plate.
It's the build plate which determins model year .
e.g. many car makers say that it has released the 08 version at this time of year, but it's still deemed to be an 07 even if it's 08 spec because of the build plate.
You won't see a 08 buid 08 compliance until late feb/march at earliest.
