oMfg!!!!

last night i went out to Bondi with my cousin and on the way i could hear a unusal tapping noise, you could barely hear it at all. by the time i got to bondi the noise was getting worse, but i thought i'd just leave it to the morning and drive her to hanny's (46km from my house)

anyway when i got back to my car after shopping i started her up and my God did the noise jump from bad to excruciatingly painful!! i feel her pain!!
i dropped my cous off home and we checke the engine again and the noise was like a very loud knocking, sounded bottom end coz could hear perfectly from wheel arch.

was driving down randwick hill and came to a round about, went to turn wheel but wheel refused to turn!! i freaked out and pulled over to suss it out, still couldnt see anything coz in the dark so i took the risk of driving her home.

my god.... i weigh 46kg, trying to steer a freakin 1 tonne car with lil chicken arms like mine and NO power steerin aint easy!!on the way home i could hear shit falling from the engine bay, banging and clucking and oh my god i was almost in tears!!! but we made it home!

opened up the engine bay and sitting ontop of my waher jet water bottle was my drive belt!! >_<"

called up hanny's thismorning and they sed bring it down so i got a tow truck to drive my car from maroubra to smithfield lol!! (he's the only mechanic i'll ever go to!!)

turns out what had happened is on the crankshaft pully, the key inside it had somehow come loose, chewed through the pully, (i'll try upload some pics, it did a nice job!!) which in turn made the pully itself loose and it damaged inside the crank hole!!! ahHHhh

i was right, i knew it was bottom end!! luckily Peter (the mechanic there) was able to repair it with a kind of metal bog stuff and replace my belts.

omfg the feeling i had as soon as he said it was the crank, everything jst sank, i was thinking engine rebuild time >_<"

they told me that 2 other preludes theyr had in there had the same problem, has anyone on here experienced this?

i got my baby girl back a few hours later and she was running immaculatly, i hope she stays this way!!!

I would have had to change my short if i heard that from my car now after everything lol... oh i would have been scared.. iv learned now if you hear something bad just stop the car and dont drive it again, get it towed somewhere unless its just a nail in your tyre :-p

lol well i'm just glad he was able to fix it!!

i shouldnt have driven on it but all i wanted to do was get home!!

lol i'm sure it didnt help either that the boys i was with where revving my engine to try and find out what the problem was!! >_<"

if your cars ever in trouble lol definantly just leave it alone and get her towed to hanny's lol!!!

hey my crankshaft pulley warped one day and i ended up with it sounding like it was supercharged!! cost me heaps to fix it coz the mechanic had to drill out the pulley bolt and grind in a new thread...

thats the pully that came loose, note the damage at the top which was done from that key thing coming loose!

Looks more like the bit from the pulley failed and hence released the key.

I'm quite worried that this happens to a stock pulley/key that probably hasn't been removed or touched by a mech before.

So is your car all fixed and back on the road yet?

Ahhh. I see. But still, what made the key come off? Did the pulley lose a chunk, thus loosening the key? Or was the key slowly wiggled out through vibrations over the thousands of kms driven? I'd still be worried since the key is able to fall out of a perfectly good pulley then....... :(

yea i dunno if he put a new pully in or not, but when i go and get my car serviced i'll ask him. i think he put a new pully in, well im hoping lol!! i got it towed at about 12 and he had it out at 4pm

but yaa he told me that he's actually had 2 other preludes like mine with the same thing in the past month or something! i was like wtf, i know personally i havnt touched anything in the enine bay but when he was pullingout my power steering pump he noticed that some one had already fiddled with it before as it had black paint around the nozzel.

also there was a bolt that holds in your pump right, and that bolt was loose, like i'm talking not even put through as far as the thread!!!! so hmmm looks like sumones done dodgy repairs!!

If you look closely at the photo all the splines on the inside of the pulley hole are worn off meaning that the key fell out then the crankshaft snout was spinning freely inside the pulley causing the splines to be worn away. I hope he put on a new pulley if he reused that one in the photo IT'S GOING TO FALL OFF AGAIN because there are no splines left to hold it in place without spinning.

also when u have a close look you can see it is quite rusty so this could have lead to the key coming loose as well. i dunno how this happened, my car has 160km so its getting older but still this shouldnt of happend!! especially in a honda!! and bottom end damage, thats the last thing i expect from a motor like mine!

my mates 4th gen si prelude makes that sound ! very very very rarely but sometimes when its idling, it'll just all of a sudden make that noise and then stop n everything would be back to normal . could they be the same problem ?

This just happened to my 1992 Prelude Si. Same thing with the ticking noise then the pulley fell out. My regular mechanic said that there was nothing he could do to fix it as apparently someone did some dodgy repairs on the crankshaft before I bought the car.

Does anyone know of a good Prelude mechanic in Adelaide that could fix it the same way they fixed dwn_boi's?
