Aim:
Paint old tacky cloth door trim inserts to improve its look

Required:
Carpet Paint or interior paint suitable for short pile carpet
Wax and grease remover
Good masking tape (must be really really sticky to stick to vynl door card)
Brush to clean debris out of trim and revive the pile

Steps:

After changing the seat covers in my civic the old door inserts looked old and tacky.

First step is to remove any door handles etc that are in the insert then clean the insert and the area around the insert with wax and grease remover. use the brush to give the carpet insert a good clean and get out any trapped hair, grass etc. once it is clean mask the area off. the insert usually tucks down into the door card use a screw driver to really get the tape into the crack. use light even coats. i did 2 coats with a bit of a brush around worn sections of card so as to ingress the paint further into the pile and hopefully improve wear resistance. more coats can be done. i did black but would maybe have done an under coat in grey if i were to do a brighter colour.

really sticky masking tape is needed to stick to the door card i gave up on cleaning it so many times and my cheap masking tape not sticking i used a bit of electrical tape.

this is a great cheaper alternative to having the insert retrimmed. the paint is harder than soft carpet and can feel a bit itchy but you get used to it. another option would be to paint the carpet in resin then spray putty and sand and paint for a smooth look.

Hmmm...That'll start rubbing off sooner or later. You'll have black stains on your arms and pant legs I believe. But I could be wrong. Let us know if there are any unusual side affects of painting fabrics, or if there are any residual staining afterwards on clothes etc.

Cheers

none and i have had it for a few weeks. tho it might depend on the quality of paint and how well you prep the cloth or carpet.

it might rub of with time as expected but with this only using 1 tenth of f$@^ all of a can keep it aside to respray when it needs it and your set. once this stuff dries its set and wouldn't stain but might if heavily painted crust off black dust that wash ofo.

you can get special fabric paint, its actually more like a dye and you saturate the fabric with it and if done in the right amount woke rub off

turned out good for relatively minimal effort.

i think he said up the top that he was using carpet paint, and yes it is more of a dye so it does a pretty good job at not coming off,i used the same stuff to paint my sun visors from grey to black and they came out great

no but now 9 months down the track alot has rubbed off where my knee and arm rubs against it. you could easily take the door card off of the car. i'll try out a different brand paint this time. i'll do it again after christmas.
