Hi all, going to be doing a tappet adjustment on my B20 (B18C head) over the next couple of days and just wanting to know a couple of things.

1 - I have adjustable cam gears, how will this affect lining them up at TDC? I couldn't see any markings on them.

2 - I have read that for a B18C head, a special tappet wrench adjuster is needed as the jam nuts sit lower than usual. Is this really necessary? Has anybody used a socket instead with no probs?

Cheers for your help.

only if the cam gears are not on 0'0'

if they are adjusted you need to mark their point, put them to 0'0' and then the cams will be at TDC when the crank is at TDC

no.

yes. but i can imagine it is MUCH easier with a proper ($200) tool...

Cheers for your help.

Cheers. So pretty much, as long as the crank is at TDC then it should be all good.

The cam gears need to be set to 0' 0' and crank at TDC. As tinkerbell suggested, mark your cam gears if they have been adjusted and set them back to 0' 0' for tappet adjustment. Once tappet adjustment is complete, then reset your cam gears to your marked out position.

The crank needs to be at TDC and if the cam gears are set to an advance/retardation (via cam gears) the tappet clearance will not be accurate.
