Hey guys, I recently did a valve adjustment on the B20. I've gone to drive it and it is now spluttering quite a bit and shuddering on idle. thought that I may have done some of the clearances wrong, so re-checked everything but it was all good.

What should I check? Spark plugs... dizzy... anything else that could contribute to the problem? Please help!

If the problem happened straight after the adjustment, then its a 99% chance its a problem with the clearances.

When you did the valve adjustment, did you rotate the engine four times and adjusted just 4 valves at each rotation?


Otherwise it could be bad spark lead resistance, water or bad connection in the spark plug leads, bad spark plugs, failing dizzy cap/coil/ignitor, dirty throttle body, clogged fuel injectors, dirty IACV filter.

Thanks. Yeah I followed a couple of DIY's very carefully and took my time doing it. If they were only slightly out, it wouldn't cause it to splutter would it?

Ever since I got the B20 it would splutter slightly when VTEC came on in 4th and 5th. Maybe the problem just got worse?

5th gear vtec.thats intense.must of been absolutely flying to get,ive never driven a b20 though,anyway,glad you found your problem

It's easy to hit vtec in 5th with my gearbox :p I sit on about 3800 going 100.

oh ok.ive got a b16,bout the same revs as you at 100,but the vtec point is about 6k.so for me to be in 5th gear vtec id be going hardcore.im sure the b20 engages vtec much earlier

depends on cams and tuner.
