What is your engine?
Some SOHC engines are safe, most DOHC engine are interference type engines (pistons hit the valves).
You can replace the timing belt and manually turn the engine, if it turns normally, it might be ok to start it up.
If in doubt, tow it to a mechanic and get them to check it out properly.

Mine just snapped :(
It's B16a1 with free spinning belt.
Anyone know if I possibly bent the valves?
There was no noise when it snapped just went to 0 revs and died.
