Hey guys i wouldnt mind that liitle extra power that the vtec d series puts out and i was wondering if its worth puting the d16y8 head on the d16y4?
Will it be reliable and not break?

also interested cos the d16y8 specs are quite substantially better then the d16y1

d16y8 has about 7kw more than the d16y4? and a tiny bit more torque + vtec :D. but if ur doin a d16y4 block and d16y8 head. im sure u'll have better gains from the higher compression? if u have a look the y8 has bigger throttle bodies + the head is better build im told. im doing a similar setup but its going to be a d16y4 block and d16y1 head and a snail attached to it.

thanks mate but i need more info on it :( Such as reliability...

It's called a mini-me conversion. There's lots on the net about it.Haha, keep the questions comin' Gio :)

is it worth all the time and money for under 10kw?

plus if your engine is fine why do want to open it and put another head on it that you dont know the condition of?

So true.If something goes wrong,ya wanna know what your doing (or a close mate).Otherwise your car-less and up for $$$.

LOL!!!

I want vtec ffs. this is the only way atm lol.

So why is it so bad to do this a lot of modded cars have mixed heads k20/k24 for example.

Whats the problem with it?

beeza
08-01-2008, 07:23 PM
Haha,it's not bad,it's just ya gotta know what your doing.
Are U/friends going to do all the work? If not then it's a lot of money for very little gain. They do it in the states all the time cause the parts are way cheap.
But check out exactly what you gotta buy, what's involved in installing it all and weigh up if it's worth it or not.
Personally I never bothered with this mod on my y4.I would just do an engine swap instead.Or boost, but with petrol prices going the way they are I'm stickin' to suspension mods :)

lol yeah i will be researching what i need and the cost.

Just put the air con on full and then when ya want V-Tec just turn it off VRROOOOOOOMM :)

Gio

i already do that :(

ek4-guy
08-01-2008, 09:07 PM
basically its not worth it unless you get the head very cheap and want to do a bit of study so you can do the work yourself

tekung89
08-01-2008, 11:40 PM
did the conversion before, lol it was gay because due to 1 mistake i made, the whole motor wouldnt start (damn dizzy needed a 180 twist) but it was quite easy. i did it all myself in 6 hours? first time and it wasnt soo bad. i did the conversion for the wank factor, jus so i could hear 'vtec yo' and the power gains were jus bonuses. and as for reliability i dnt think u'll need to worry unless ur y8 head is old..its not like ur downgrading. u'll need to chip ur ecu however for vtec to work or plug in a p28? and then jus wire some plugs to the ecu from the vtec solenoid.
the items involved would be:
y8 timing belt
head and assuming everything is attached like IM,dizzy etc
new headgasket
new fluids like oil and coolant
and while ur there go get a new waterpump if u want.

all up it costed me 400? dunno about u though. good luck with it

Gio

wanna do mine?

[ricer]
09-01-2008, 11:18 AM
oh yeah for y4 u will need to modifiy your wiring quite alot to run any other ECU

Gio

tekung wanna help me out if i decide to go ahead? preeeeaaaseee

tekung89
09-01-2008, 02:35 PM
yeh jus shoot me questions if u have problems gio, its not as hard as u think it is. one thing i learned from this mini me setup is to take ur time gathering the parts and installing them. take one day to remove ur old head and another to put the new head in. bare in mind that u will need tools like an airgun or a torque wrench which will be used for the timing belt change (taking the crank pulley off) and bolting ur new head back down on ur block. also for vtec to work u will need the d16y8 ecu. have a little search on google. im sure there are some DIY write ups

http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=554053

when i had trouble i jus followed that as a guide line..wat we boiz will do for vtec lol. all the best.

In what way do you make this assumption?

If anything the Y1 is stronger..

The Y8 gear box has better final drive but that's swappable with the Y1 anyway

Gio
09-01-2008, 07:08 PM
what did the y1 come out of?

Not sure what that other guys on about but anyway...

EG5 VTI 92-95 SOHC VTec 96Kw obd1

EK... (Not sure) VTI 96-00 SOHC VTec 96kw obd2

The yanks seem to think so!!

Do a search for D16Z6 V D16Y8 and read

What car is it going in though?

Motor must be a newer then the body or its illegal

isnt there also an issure with head studs / bolts? with a vtec head on a non vtec block? eg need 7 y1 bolts and 1 y4 bolt etc... unsure on specifics however something i remember reading a few times... even seen ARP make up custom kits for these conversions, being so popular in the states and all...

Gio
10-01-2008, 11:19 AM
going on the engine in the car atm

Yeah that's right..

For some reason they made the head a bit different :thumbdwn:

ARP make a kit just for this as I think two bolts are shorter lol

i have plenty of y1 headstud bolts here :D thank god for that, also d15b headstuds are also the same as the y1's. does anyone know which holes u'll need to use the y1 headstuds on?

Nope but just compare size as you remove yours

tekung89

jus put the d16y1 head on the y4 block today. the y1 head studs are longer and u only need to use two of them, one for the top left hand corner headbolt and the other for the top right. almost there with my build =)

Gio
29-01-2008, 04:44 PM
have u driven it yet?

tekung89
29-01-2008, 09:42 PM
nopes not yet, but it should be done tomorrow evening. gona take the bugger for a little drive to see how well it does. reconditioned y1 head, 100 xxx km y4 block + snail :D it should go alright

STOCK

Get that shit on the dyno.

tekung89
31-01-2008, 09:03 AM
jesus, its a big gain man, i dunno by how much but shes quick even driving normally, im guessing i have more torque because the motor originally was from an ek and eg's are lighter + the snail does help. i'll post some snapp shots of it soon.

also i forgot to add, if u guys plan on doing this head swapp , i found that torquing down the head with the recommended torque of '22lbs ft, and 53lbs ft' is not enough, i would go 22lbs, 53lbs, turn back 90degrees and retorque at 60lbs.

i would say this car is a 100kw+ at the wheel no less

01-02-2008, 05:36 PM
thanks for the kind words guys, i will put her on the dyno soon to see wat numbers i can pull out, the radiator will have to be changed because i am having some heating problems, the oem radiator atm jus isnt enough to keep this girl cool the the highway. screw the 100kw atw, from last nights event, i reckon i have 120kw+ atw no joke lol

Have the engine internals been upgraded or still stock? and what's the Rev limiter set at?
I want to see at what RPM the engine stops making power.

tekung89
02-02-2008, 03:11 PM
nahh no internal upgrades only reconditioned, rev limiter is at 8200 i think we'll jus say 8000 to be sure. we'd really have to put it on the dyno to see where the power curve falls but i still feel power at 8grand, full boost is in the 3grands somewhere (havnt really checked) and vtec is somewhere prob in the 5.5k rpms

beeza
02-02-2008, 03:23 PM
That would be sweet if it's making power up to 8000rpm.
