Hi Guys,

I changed the oil a few months ago....
up untill now, ive probably done around 6-7,000Ks on the oil since last change with its filter. i have 2 QUESTIONS

1.) When I filled in oil after i drained it, i measured it to the maximum meter on the dip stick, for e.g | .| ( the dot is the mark of oil close to max meter)
when i started the engine, and left it running for few min, i understand it sucks bit of oil in... but does that mean i need to compensate for that? or leave it as when u turn the car off, the oil will return back to sump?

2.) I now checked my oil levels (after the 6-7,000Ks) on it, and the level is at
|. | ( the dot is near the min oil level)
I always check my car for leaks, not a drip, even my sump reservoir is dry. what is causing the loss?

Only thing i did wrong which i really really really regret, it flying through an intersectioon to make it through the orange lights, and the intersection has a massive dip, and it crashed my under-car so hard, i thought i lost my engine. my coin box flew inside the car.
I checked under the car, thank God all is good, but my Transmission and Oil sump is scraped, the exhaust scraped abit, and the front under-lip stock spoiler is heavily scraped with the bolts half gone.

lol is your car vtec? maybe your doing too much vtec flying? haha i do 100km of driving a day and i have to top up my oil with nearly a 5L container every 3 weeks! >_<"

stupid high revving engines raping my oil tank! haha

From the level of oil consumption in that 7000km that you did, that is alright. Some people go from the max to min line in under 3000km!

The engine has done around 150000km so that consumption is normal. You would need to recondition the engine to achieve minimal oil loss.

My Civic went from max to min in a few days, CAM seal oil leak ftw :p
I had to top it up every two weeks, but at least the oil stayed relatively fresh lol

lol that was like me with my celica i had a crank seal that some how came off and imbedded itself into the block >_<" every week she needed to be topped up lol but she'd jst pee it back out of her cracked seal lol

lol my bottom end always seems to be getting into trouble!

Ah sweet, as long as thats normal, i was just wondering where all that oil is going if its not leaking.

time for an oil change =)

The vapours exit the block through the PCV valve and back into the injector plate where it enters the combustion chamber and is burnt.

Wow didn't know that, thanks fellas.

On older cars, factors such as piston ring blowby and a weakened PCV valve spring can increase your oil consumption as well (damaged headgasket too, but that will turn your coolant brown or your oil milky). So look at the PCV valve if you experience worse oil consumption in the future.

nah my oil is pretty solid black, and coolant nice & greeny

If you are using a mineral oil, you should change it every 5000km. I found that the engine became rough when I hit 7000km and that was without fanging the engine.

IMO it largely depends on the sort of driving you primarily do. If you do a lot of city driving that involves a lot of short trips and idling in stop / start traffic then 5000km oil changes are the way to go. Numerous short trips where the oil doesn't really get to temp for long and the engine spends more of it's time as a % of total running time running richer because it's not at full operating temp is bad for the oil in the longer term (fuel dilution of the oil, and possibly un-evaporated water contamination in the sump).

If you do a lot of country driving with longer trips, little idling etc and the engine spending more of it's running time at correct operating temp then the typical manufacturer's recommended 10,000km interval is usually perfectly OK.

Car companies like to specify longer service intervals because it helps sell cars (many typical customers are put off by shorter recommended service intervals), and don't really care much whether your engine only lasts only 200,000km instead of 300,000+...
