Hey guys i got my gli cluster today but i want to match up the k's that are on the cluster to the k's that are on my engine. This means that i have to rewind the odometer on my new gli cluster. I have heard that if they get wound back that the numbers will never match up 'straight' again. Anyone had theres wound back and can anyone do it for me or tell me where to get it done?

Thanks, Chris.

The odometer is supposed to match the chassis not the engine.

But if you do wind it back remember records are usually kept of your milage. Its pretty basic to do it yourself, you just need a delicate touch and patience. Dont force any clips.

Well i want to rewind it to match my chassis then. ATM the new cluster which i want to put in is 205 000 k's and my chassis is at 138 000. So i want the new cluster to say 138, 000. Can u explain how to do it?

simple get a GLi cluster than reads 138000
rewinding a cluster is very dodgy..and u can screw i up easily

Hahaha, sounds sooooooooooooooo dodgy.

And yes, when you rewind it, the numbers NEVER line up straight ever again.

Gio

wow how gay. looks like i am going to have to hunt for one that reads 138 000 or less km's

Take the instrument cluster, complete, to these guys. They can set the odo to what you want, however they will probably want to see the old cluster to prove that your not scamming.

Winding the speedo with a drill or by driving in reverse is retarded.... Most speedos do ~650 revolutions per km... thus-

205000 - 138000km = 67000km

67000 x 650 = 43550000 revolutions

If your drill does 2000RPM -

43550000 / 2000 = 21775 minutes, or roughly 15 days.

By which time your drill will be soundly worn out...

ok guys i found that i may be able to take apart both clusters and swap the odometers over with some skill :)

I also know that this is not the Ek1 cluster but its the first large pic i could find on google.

One problem though... the needle wont come off (yellow arrow) which meens i cant take off the speedo dial (blue arrow) which meens i cant get to the odometer.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k177/chrisgiovine/cluster.jpg

Can someone tell me how the the needle is connected to the cluster and/or how to get it off. I know it can come off cause people change their dials all the time. I have tried to pull it off but i dont want to break it.

Thanks.

rewound it?

the needle does come off with force but don't do it... they are spring loaded. if that stopper for the needle wasn't there it'd end up at the bottom somewhere.

WHEN you do take the needle off it'll be off.. i had to drive next to an accord euro and another brand car to test... both were on walkie talkies with me, ... all going at the same speed ~80km/h and when we were all matched got my passenger to press the needle back in... it's dodge as but either way, once you take the needle off you gotta get those instrument cluster guys to re-calibrate it again.

Gio
12-01-2008, 12:53 PM
lol. instead of pulling it off u could undo the four skrews at the back of the cluster :) someone helped me out on that

BTW thread closed thanks for the help. All done now here is a link to what i done instead of getting it rewound.

Argh.

Because the needle has a stop on the dial it will need to be recallibrated when you re-fit it.

TAKE IT TO THAT SHOP ALREADY.

Also, if you do take it appart do NOT touch the dial, or the inside of the glass, you will *never* get the fingerprints off.

smartest thing ive read so far

The skills and equipment required to do this are the same as resetting the odometer hes got... And as I understand it he doesnt have either.

one4spl, i swapped the odometer works fine.

I dont understand what u are trying to say, that meant to be a pay out? ^^

Okay, just to clarify....

I used to fix speedos for a living for about 5 years, working in my Dad's shop who has been doing it for the last 20.

In my experience people who do this stuff at home screw it up, a lot. On a daily basis I would have to fix something that some idiot had broken whilst trying to repair, modify or rewind a speedo.

Fixing and modifying instruments needs good skills and a pedantic attitude. Most people don't have either.

So forgive me if I doubt your ability to swap the odometers over and still have a working, accurate and cosmetically un-damaged speedo. The odds, in my opinion, are right up there with the odds of me performing successful dental surgery on myself.

That’s why I recommended you take it to a qualified repair shop.

If you have done it all successfully and have managed to re-calibrate the speedo after dismantling it, then good work!

That is all.

Cheers,

Luke

Yeah, just did, you didnt need to take the speedo itself apart, so it should all be fine :)
