You cannot legally road register / comply a jdm type-r through the normal streams because they were sold locally here. The only way to get one on the road is through private import - which requires you to have owned and used the vehicle for work in Japan for at least 12 months. Best bet is to find one already imported here.

No legal way at all. Either take all the panels and parts off and drive a gsi / vtir with ITR parts , or just use the car as a track car.

^^ A tad quick off the line ya lot

First of all under which scheme did you import the car?
Personal import or SEVS?
If personal import was it imported for road use or race/dismantle?
Do you have an import approval?

If you have an import approval it's really really easy

Take the car to a VASS engineer
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/RoadSafety/VehicleSafety/ApprovalCertificatesVASS.htm
Personally I've used Enkeilman, nice people to deal with

Carry out any modifications that they request probably will ask you to fit child seat anchor points at the back and a fuel filler restrictor; just get a AUDM filler and swap it over

Once they sign off on your import approval you take the car and get a RWC from anyone that is licensed for Light Vehicles the RWC license out the front will have a 'LV' on it

Once that is done call VicRoads and tell them you need to register an imported vehicle and make an appointment

Go to VicRoads and they will look over the car, take your money and give you registration in exchange

Super important is the import approval
