View Full Version : Removing sump plug - kinda of urgent

1996ek1
14-01-2008, 04:40 PM
Well, im trying to change my as its abit old, and will be boosting soon (probably 2-3k KM) and just want to change the oil for now, but i cant remove the sump plug.

It feels like there is no way in hell its coming off, can any suggest a way of possibly removing it?

It is so solid, and impossible...

destrukshn
14-01-2008, 04:44 PM
not impossible
lol
use a long ring 17mm ring spanner.
or use your using a ratchet and socket, hit the ratchet as hard as you can with your hand, or use a breaker bar.
or jerk on it hard.
lol.

1996ek1
14-01-2008, 04:50 PM
Lol i tried. I have them like bullshit sockets that are with like 18 edges, not just 6.

And no long ring spanners ><

I keep pulling it hard but cos of the 18 thing socket or w/e edges it got, it keeps falling off, and im worried about rounding the nut.

The 6 edge sockets and spanners i have stop before 17 -_-

And iuno what a breaker bar is exactly... is it just using another bar for leverage ?

destrukshn
14-01-2008, 04:54 PM
okay, DO NOT put constant force, use impact, so do not pull on it constantly.
yes a breaker bar is like a long hand with the head to syou can put a socket on it.

teh_mechanic
14-01-2008, 04:57 PM
breaker bar is like a ratchet (but it doesnt ratchet) and about 15 inches or so long, for undoing tight nuts/bolts.

you can get it undone,if your multihex spanner is slipping then do yourself a favour and go buy a six side one before you round the sump plug off and get into a whole new world of trouble.get a longer one,the longer your bar/spanner is the more leverage you have therefore you can get the same result with less effort.

1996ek1
14-01-2008, 04:58 PM
mmm fuk... only 6 side-ed (lol) ones i have are open ended....

aaronng
14-01-2008, 05:04 PM
Go buy a single 6-sided socket. $10 is better than having to drill out the sump plug or damaging the threads.

1996ek1
14-01-2008, 05:14 PM
Hmm well, i actually found a 6 sided size 17.

Its like a tube with a hole in the middle.
So i gently hammered it onto the plug, (so it was on nice and tight)

I put a LONG screw driver in the hole and pulled, but it always falls off, like 1 edge is round ?? I cant use my other hand to hold it (but it doesnt feel like that wud help, it always just slips off one edge (not a round corner, the edge?) because its too low. But its not a good idea to jack it up and try remove the plug, is it ?

if u round the nut, just use a wise grip plier

clamp it on tite and use your hands and tap it open :)

1996ek1
14-01-2008, 05:22 PM
Yea shit. looks pretty rounded too me now. too bad i cant buy a new plug at this time...
Well not that round, but enough that theres no way a 6 sided can get it off. It actually seems to be rounding my 6 sided...

Im thinking of some choice works atm
(and their not nice ones)

Do places like auto-one sell new plugs? -_-

destrukshn
14-01-2008, 05:30 PM
go to any honda dealership, they should stock em.

Eww, those are crap. Get a proper one with a 1/2" square drive. Don't worry about damaging the plug. Go get a new one (and a new washer) at the dealer tomorrow.

Looks like someone needs some Kingcrome :D If you really want to take it off now, a vice grip = teh s**t. Once it's on you can tap it with a hammer to get it loose. Always use quality tools with cars! Nothing worse than rounding and stripping nuts with made in china/taiwan tools.

14-01-2008, 07:13 PM
kinchromes made in china ;) trust it from someone who works at bunnings. if you wanna save urself $40 getting a breaker bar, get a pipe, stick it at the end of the ratchet and it'll come off very easy esp the longer the pipe is :)

Heh, i was at Honda today.

They charged me $20.30 for a 100 amp fuse for the positive terminal because i blew it when i was re-installing an ECU....

How much do they charge for a sump plug ?

yes...
it was for FN2, just got ecu back from jtune,

and was installing it, and the fuse box connectors touched the battery neg terminal, and there was some huge sparks ( ive done it a few times and shit myself every time i see the sparks, haha) and then i put all together, and nothing was working. and i was looking everywhere, cudnt find anything and like 'SHIT'

then i took the huge cover off the positive terminal, and saw there was a fuse...

was rather relieved when i saw that fuse was gone... i thought i REALLY broke something haha

Made in Taiwan.

Which brand would you recommend instead?
Taiwan, china; i still get customers coming back pissed off with those spanner sets. Stanley/Cheap brands/sidchrome come out of the same factory :) they even come in the same pallette lol, kinchrome or snap on seems to be the way 2 go

Lol i was turning the right way.
Na i just woke up, gonna drive to Honda in 20 minutes, and when i get back ill try take it off.

Taiwan and China, heaps of difference with regards to build quality between the two. Kincrome and Sidchrome come out of the same factory as well. There is only 1 tool factory left in Taiwan.

Hmm i got my sumpplug and washer, was only $9.40 or something.
And then i stopped by bunnings and they had no single hex sockets, so i stopped by some other place, and they didnt either, and i stopped by repco and they did, but it is a LONG one. like 7cm long.

Would that be any good? Because its so long i imagine it being harder to use ..

Tu88y
15-01-2008, 01:21 PM
long spanner are good

The long one is a deep drive socket. It is fine as long as you have space to fit the socket on. Did you try looking for the black coloured short 6-point sockets? Those are short impact sockets.

1996ek1
15-01-2008, 03:03 PM
Didnt see any short sockets. Thats why i bought the long one...
I was abit... err about buying it. but yea, just have to get that bolt off when im not feeling lazy and have just realised my vice grips are soft of broken.

This is so annoying not having the proper tools....

aaronng
15-01-2008, 03:06 PM
Well, with that deep drive socket, you are 1 step into getting good tools. If there is a Total Tools near you, they do a large range of sockets too.

1996ek1
15-01-2008, 03:25 PM

1996ek1
15-01-2008, 04:15 PM
no really, guys i think im right here. its STUCK.
I can get the socket on it good, and doesnt matter how hard i pull on it, NOTHING. It just wont move no matter what.
The socket doesnt fall off or slip or anything.

gnx1987
15-01-2008, 04:17 PM
yeah get one of these. dunno what it's called but it works a treat. basically put it on the bolt and pull. the harder you pull the harder it grips.

Dont use vice-grips or such to take it off, they will just ruin the head. Use a quality peripheral drive socket and long handle, and put a pipe on the handle.

Also, you should use half-inch sockets, anything less is for girly men.

Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.

the car is raised when you do it right? so you get more leverage?

1996ek1
15-01-2008, 08:32 PM
No its not raised lol. When i look at the sump plug, im turning anti-clock wise. (thats when im upside down under the car)

I thought it wasnt good to raise the car when im under it lol.

My problem here is shit all leverage. Drive way goes downhill from the garage so i put it just out of the garage, so front is higher. I got kind of under it but still not enough leverage.

Should i just jack it up and go for it ?
(im pretty sick of this stupid plug, i think ill just take to mech. )

Last time i tried stands, the stands i have have like guide rails welded on, and when i was going down off the ramps, they caught my bumper ( i had no clue ) and they ripped it. ( my bumper has 2 rips under it , 1 on each side)

K. i quit. ill take to mechanics.
