Hi everyone,

I have spoken to barefootbonzai about my civic and he recommends a B16a for my car since I only have 5k and what I want from it. I'm after more power and faster reaction time. I don't know much about honda engines so is the B16a a good way to go? And what else could I do to improve the performance? Extractors, exhaust etc.

Thanx for your help.

what engine do you currently have ? b16a is one of the cheapest options yes, and using quality extractors and flywheel/clutch combo should give u a bit more power and reaction time if driven right.

just your normal 1.6L engine. How many kws would we be talking with the b16a and using quality extractors and flywheel/clutch combo?

With the right breathing mods and a good tune, it is very easy to get a clean 100kw + at the wheels with a B16A!!
My JDM B16 pulled 102 ATW with a type R T.B, makeshift induction (k&n ram in a home made box) and a no name mild steel cat back...

Speaking from experience (I used to have a civic cxi which was converted using a jdm b16a spec halfcut), it definitely is a good conversion. It will give you that much more response and that little bit of added power. Don't get me wrong, it will never be as powerful as say a civic with a b18c motor as a base, but you can definitely make it into a fun car. Couple the conversion with suspension mods like coilovers, sway and strutbars, and you will have one gun daily driver.

As for power, I put on a custom sri, mandrel bent 2 1/4 exhaust, exedy heavy duty clutch and ctr flywheel and I managed to get 103 odd kws atw. I also put some 5zigen headers but didn't get to dyno the car before i sold it (would definitely have bumped up my atw reading by a fair bit). And once you get used to the power and start to want more, you can just upgrade the engine block, do a hybrid conversion, or turbo the car.

b16 is a nice package with plenty of potential later on.
If your lacking power still you can always boost it.

For NA i was very happy with my b16a, low maintence pocket rocket

Thanx for the help guys. I think I might go with the B16a, seems like a great engine. By the way can you put double overhead cams on the B16a??

okay seems like u have noidea about the B serise engines
B16a is a double overhead cam engine with VTEC
it makes 118kw for the AUDM b16a and 125kw for the JDM B16a
revs up to 8200 redline

Well you got one thing rite. I have no idea about honda engines in general. lol I'm going from what little i have manged to find to read on the net and my 10 min convo with barefootbonzai. I'm very interested in the B16a, so that will most likely be the engine i'm gona go with.

awesome choice... i used to have a d16y cxi, after i bougth the VTIR ( with B16a) , i found it so much fun to drive and bit more power to push, and the handling is just fantastic.

I was supprise that a 1.6 can take on a 3L older engine... no prolem, for example, VP commordore.. .

for the thread starter - thats 118kw and 125kw at the flywheel,so dont be expecting those figures at the wheels without thousands more spent in mods, 120kw at the wheels is acheivable whilst staying n/a,any more than that, and you start talking big dollars,or you can turbo.Im a big fan of the b16.very good engine to start with for someone of your experience level.too many people go out and get a 150kw turbo to start with.you dont need that much power, sure later on you may want to build up to that, but you need to learn from somewhere.

Nice choice, hope your conversion all goes well, barefoot will take care of you,got my b16 from him, good guy,no bull$hit

Thanks for the feedback people. This really ensured me that a b16 is a good choice. I cant wait until it is done, I'm sure I will have a lot of fun with it. I will put pictures up as soon as the b16 is in.
