hey guys, just wondering.. I spoke with one of my friends who happens to be a mechanic and he claims that some hondas dont operate under the OBDI, OBDII or the consult port.. he says that honda produce there own protocol, is this true.. only asking because I was intending on getting a scantool device for OBDII protocol and he told me i'd only be wasting my money.. if its not could someone recommend a budget scantool for a 92' model?

cheers

If you have a 92' model you would have an OBDI, so he is right, purchasing an OBDII scantool would be a waste :p

why do you want a scantool ? Do you just want to check ECU codes ? this can be done via shorting the service connector.
Or for tuning purposes ?

Anyway , your prelude is OBD1 ~ a scan tool to suit OBD1 will suit your car :)

not tuning.. I have the ABS light on in my car and i need to turn it off for the road worthy.. so I was thinking of getting a scantool to find the error code so I know where to start looking.. I was thinking of just removing the globe from the dash, but that'd be illegal xP

u can do the code check on abs to just like normal code check and the abs light will start to flash, try reset the abs ecu unit first

you dont need a scantool,as ben highlighted, you short out the two pins in the service connector, which makes the ecu blink the engine check light to give a code for any engine fault codes,or it blinks the abs light for any abs fault codes, you then find what the code refers to and you then have an idea whats wrong.

theres a write up in the diy section on how to do it

you do not need your abs to be working for roadworthy in victoria. your brakes will still function, just without abs.

usually with older cars the abs control unit is stuffed and needs replacement, this is usually pretty big bucks

why dont you book a honda dealer and get them to erase, diagnose the srs problem? wont that be cheaper?

P.s for those that are too tight to go to Honda can all suffer as it may cost more in the long run. I have no sympathy for those people.
