Hey its that time of month again when your window tints can be a savior in the heat. I am undecided whether i should get 15% or 35% for the same price quoted. I am taking a big risk by getting 15% with all the stories about insurance claims void and copping canaries?

if your worried, get 35%. Plain and simple.

or with 15% just drive with your window 1/2 down.

kthxbye m8.

If your worried about heat get a proper show that does UV protection to do it...

a lot of people who do side jobs and just put tints on are actually useless... sure they look cool but my 10% burn my skin where as my GFs 35% UV coated one barely warms my skin.

All metal based films are UV reducing but the old plastic based ones ( turn purple ) these lesser quality films had nothing reducing UV.

Most if not all films today are Metal based as anyone who is any good will offer a lifetime warranty on the tint and install, can i suggest that if your worried about insurance and or Police then get 35's as per law, but there is a 28% available which is just that slighty darker that it looks good, but not dark enough that it attracts too much attention.

Also depends on the car, if its stock looking then you'll rarely get picked on, no matter how dark, too low, loud, standout, then your going to attract the attention anyway and they'll go looking for things to pick you up on.

If in Sydney, i can suggest a great guy for tints. PM if needed.

i'd go 20% tints are so good, i have dark tints with a blue tinge, i think the tinge makes them look not as dark

How often do you drive at night?

Too_Gr33dy
22-01-2008, 07:15 PM
Well i didn't know about the tint laws until the tinter asked me what sort of tints i wanted, and i just said some dark ones. He then advised me if i wanted dark tints it would be illegal and insurance would void my policy.

3-4 times a week of night driving. I had some sort of tint on my old car - i think about 35% and it has never bothered me.

i'd too also go 20% its dark enough to not be clearly seen but not draw too attention from cops or make it difficult to see out of at night. i have had in the past 10% 18% 20% and 35%. i'd never go 35% again! waste of money. not even dark! 10% is clear as day illegal and 18+20% was perfect.

i crashed my last car wrote it off and it had 10% tint i got my full pay out no tint questions asked. it is alot harder to see out of at night on dark streets but with street lights and day it is fine.

pic of 10 %

as you can see they are pitch black

i'll have to take pics of my now 20% tint job if you want but i am alot happier with the 20%

20% is just right
35% is great on the cars with abit of the factory tint in the glass and dark interiors
how old is the car?
and like DSP26 said the UV rating really matters...

i would get 25% or 35% (for legal sake) 3M tint, its guaranteed for life and the best stuff ive had on any of my hondas =)

also had my car written off with full pay out and no questions asked

ANY tint % is allowed on pre-94 vehicles as a LOOPHOLE.

because ADR states that it needs to have been applied before 94 (oct-93 i think)...

hai

its upto 5% aug 94

I had 15% on my car and it passed the one and only Insurance payout it went through. However, I had to go back to the wreck and wind the windows down ;)

My next car will be 35% on the front, with 15% on the backs. Not worth the hassle of feeling like a criminal when cops drive past or worrying you're not insured.

^- older cars pre 94 are allowed darker tints up to 5% i think

not a good idea if u drive at nite with ur windows up.

I had 15% on my old DA9 during the day was great n at nite it was ok if there were street lamps but couldnt see without anysort of light. Never got pulled over and i scraped the gutter a few times with the windows up.

18% to 20% is ur best bet.

Does pre 94 include 94?

i have a copy of the QLD vehicle modifications guide and it doesent even mention any exception of tints applied pre-94, it just states any darker than 35% is illegal.

That's 25% right?

The way I see it though, I used to have 15%, and it was dark and looked hot and was illegal. 25% isn't as dark, doesn't look as good but is still illegal.

Looks like a big piece of steel dipped in chrome, surely illegal.

Anyone like to expand on this, I bet it would be fkn expensive.

But i guess 25% doesnt look as illegal as 15% so if a cop or an assesor looks over your vehicle your more likely to get away with the 25%. Unless of course they use a lightmeter.

The apparent darkness of a tint can also depend on the colour of the car, the interior and lighting conditions. If you are worried about insurance, defects etc...just get 35%. Its still pretty good.

wtf are u serious? 35% tint sucks nVts, if u have trouble seeing out at night, u defntly have more than 35%...

not stealing thread, but i got 35% and i want it darker, is there a cheaper option besides replacing the tint?

I have 5 % on my Mazda and its pretty hard 2 see at night time rofl especially in dark streets with less lighting but you eventually get used to it & looks good and does keep the UV rays away.

you can put tint over you old tint to make it darker and dodgy. i have done this in the past. be warned tint doesn't like sticking to tint but can easily be done.

Yer 35% is legal and if you get caught with anything less you will be defected. I have 5% myself and i just roll my windows down at night. I kind of have to roll them down anyways becuase i nearly smashed into a island recently and it's really dangerous, but it looks hot :) btw there is a clause if you brought your car with tints less then %35 before 1994 before the law come into play and you still have your recite you can get away with it.

Looks like a big piece of steel dipped in chrome, surely illegal.

Anyone like to expand on this, I bet it would be fkn expensive.

they're called mirror tints, and they are fully illegal, yet they look soo awesome, i can sit in my car, and people dont even know i'm sitting in there!!! other advantages, I left a block of chocolate on the front seat, and by lunchtime it would of been completely melted, however it wasn't. The mirror tints are metal based, and deflect the heat quite effectively, you can notice this by holding up a sheet of tint in the sun, and feel the warmth off it.

anyone know where i could get some, can pm me :D

otherwise, k-mart and supercheaps sell a faded tint, from blue down to black or chrome to black. these tints look pretty slick too.
I thought these faded tints would look cool with the chrome side towards the top, however the chromed part is 20% and i would of been wiser to have the chrome part down the bottom (word of advice anyone going to tint their windows.

and on the other hand, you should tint the windows yourself
hmmm, has someone set up a forum thing on how to tint?
