Hi guys.

I'm in the market for a VTEC 5th gen at the moment. I've come across a few, mostly are auto which I don't mind as I'd be driving it to work sometimes.

The going price here in Melbourne seems to average around 12k - 13k.

My main question basically is, when do the 5th gen preludes start encountering problems based on the kilometres they've done. Meaning, when does the wear and tear mechanically start to show.

The one I'm looking at has around 190+km on it. As long as it has log books, and a major service, should this suffice?

Another question is, what sort of things are there to look out for when purchasing a 5th gen? I've looked up reviews on the net, most if not all seem to be very positive, with a main con being the road noise at around the 50-80 kmph + mark.

Thanks for reading, your input would be appreciated.

i've heard of a few problems with the sports shift transmission.. with the manuals the clutch is really expensive to replace... ask the guys on www.preludeaustralia.com

stay away from early models with triptronic gearboxes. Triptronics tend to fail, if you get a 5th gen get a manual.

Then all you need to worry about is how well the car has been looked after inside and out.

The better the car is maintained, the longer the car will last, as with most things.

i own a 5th gen and i personally would only go for the manual. a new clutch i've been quoted jst above $700 and thats for a heavy duty clutch too.

if your going to get one, with a farir few kms on it, get an inspection done by a mechanic, perferable a qualified honda specialist, its a shame ur not in sydney!

one thing that seems to be a common problem in these cars is the harmonic balancer, make sure you get this checked out with a reliable mechanic, other wise you could be up for a engine rebuild!!
