HI
Just really noob question
I think the answer is yes on this but want to make sure;
Is putting in a H.I.D kit on a non projector head light unit (like my EK civic) illegal?
Must it be Projectors?
Thanks

Projectors or not, they're still illegal. Unless the HID's are stock.

legal if they are used with HID approved headlights.
But then the cops can still hassel you. Just tuck the HID ballast away from view

sure thing, hide ballast away :D
but if it aint projectors, u tend to blind other drivers... but who cares huh!!! :p

from my knowledge, HID is only legal if the headlights are fitted with auto levelers and washers.
^^
He's correct you need projectors + washers
Also the brightness is also a legal factor
BUT usually cops won't hassle you too much so if it's a risk you wanna take go for it

i've been using HIDs for 3 years, about 6 month in stock EG headlights, and the rest (2.5 years) in my angel eyes projectors...as long as u aim the beam a bit lower than normal halogen, u should have no problems even with cops;)

exactly. i recently got defected for having aftermarket projectors in my lude, but they didnt say anything about the HID.
cop just pointed to the ballasts and said "what are those?" i said "they are ballasts for the headlights"
he didnt say anything more.
stupid thing is that i have had to put the stock headlights in to keep this cop off my arse. small town, he knows me too well to put them back in till i move to melbourne in a couple of months.
so because he didnt like my aftermarkets i am now blinding people by having HID in stock headlights, which he has seen and not said anything about...how dodgy is that?

Hmm ok interesting
I think i'll stay away from installing them in my car then cause i don't wanna be a nuisance on the road blinding people.
Thanks for the input.

Try this product: link (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53885)
I wanted an aftermarket look, HID's were always breaking down on me, so I went for MTEC halogens in extended wattage.

I have the JDM DC5R HIDs. Ballasts are mounted onto the bottom of the headlight assembly.
The JDM car still uses reflectors and doesn't have self levelling or have washers. Perhaps our laws are different to Japan.

Yea i've been using Mtecs with higher wattage for many years and it never failed on me either. I like the colour but is dissapointing with the brightness.
I want to go for somethin more brighter as the Mtecs lose alot of brightness due to there heavy tint of blue on the bulb. So i am now running on Philips x-treme globes and is very happy with the brightness but is unhappy with the colour as it looks standard.
The only next step is to go H.I.D as they are bright and nice in colour.
Even if aimed correctly, will the high output of the H.I.D leak out into other directions and blind traffic?
Sounds like a good investment if it doesn't and if cops wont defect them...

i think that you are correct saying that HIDs are a great investment. the increased "brightness" or "vision" is amazing.
i have a dc2... and was previously running OEM globes, then changed to brighter 4200K 80w (lucky they didnt melt my wiring), then to 6000K HIDs. the difference is awesome. much clearer and also better looking :P
so in the end i think they are a great option, but as you said aim them downward so you dont blind oncoming traffic ... or cops heheh...

what has that got to do with anything?
if you dont have something constructive to say then dont say anything at all.
now...mugen civic...to answer your question.
they do have some light "leakage"
only way to avoid that totally with HID is to run them in projectors.
this picture shows 8000k HID in a stock 5th gen prelude headlight:
(picture from preludepower.com)
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f205/JLUDE01/HID%20retrofit/HID%20kit%20versus%20Retrofit/Dscf3921.jpg
and this is mine with just the "cheap crap" ebay projectors running 6000k HID:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y82/Manabir/P9050023.jpg
alot sharper cutoff and i get very little to no light "leakage"
HID in projectors is really the best bet.
if projectors are out of the question, then they are fine in reflectors headlights...just make sure that you have the adjusted right.
i got a defect for my headlights (not adr approved...butthole cop) and have been running the HID in the stock headlights for over a month now.
i have not had a single other motorist flash their hi beams at me.
so they must not be too bad.
mine are aimed down lower than my projectors were.
does that help?

Hi muge civic, i got a 98 civic with stock headlight, i got HID 6000k setup on it, actually the civic stock headlight are not too bad, because it got a cover for the bulb, so cannot see the light from the bulb directly. it might not work as well as projector headlight, because projector headlight can project the light for a longer distance.
with my HID, i aim it bit lower, it actually pretty good, and i haven't got any problem with on coming traffic...
