If i have lost my car keys for my 96 Ek1, do i have to take it to honda for new keys and immobilizer reprogramming for like $600 ?
I have the second key, but when i bought the car, the previous owner peeled off the black part at the top of the key, which had something in it, so the key no longer works. A picture of the key flashes when i try start my car with it...

your out of luck, unless they can read the chip code for you from the immobliser, which i have heard that honda does not like to do your in trouble. Try ringing Honda Australia and asking them if they have the immobilser code and see if it can get programmed from that. They should be able to look it up from the chassis number
I've only ever programed the key from another program Key.
That's why when i only had 1 key i made 2 spares.
The other thing is to get a chipped ECU with the immobilser turned off.

Lol great...
Ill ring Honda australia and see what they say...
try pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL
no just press F5.
cant you just get new keys and an ingition barrel, etc?

yeah it's the red key system, which they have on most hondas of that era. all cars came with a red key which is soley used for reprogramming the normal 'black' keys.
if you don't have a red key the replacement black keys are unable to be programmed to the immobiliser, which means you are up for a new immobiliser unit and keys + cutting/programming.
it's a shit system, but that's why dealers always say DON'T LOSE YOUR RED KEY!!!
problems normally come up when people buy they cars second hand with no red key

My red key is in a small oem honda packet.
It has a red rubber top insted of the normal black also mine has a ring around it that holds a small metal tag that is stamped.
It should have been in the wallet ur handbook is in

Just go to hontoys and get a new key set with ecu and key barrel should be around $300, make sure their all from the same car and that its manual or u will have the engine light popping up.

Dont lose and dont use the red key. Anyways you are out of luck my friend, unless you find your keys you gonna be paying 600+.
This is what a red key looks like : it looks just like a normal Genuine Honda key but red version

the red key is a master key if u use it u cannot use your old key it is for very big emegerencys only. go to honda ask to buy a blank black key or 2 then go 2 any lock smith get them 2 cut it 2 ur drivers door lock then go 2 honda and ask if they can program your key it wont cost any where near 600

that's not right dude i got another key cut & programmed with just my black key and they programmed it works fine. I have no red key either.
If you have no red key get another black key cut and programmed so that you have a spare in case of incidents like this.
This has come up a few times now, you don't need the red key to cut and program a new key. It can be done with a a working black key.
I've asked honda dealerships before and they always use this crap excuse and try to make you buy the $600 kit if you loose your red key.
I've already cut 2 spares since i brought the car cos i lost my key also

If Honda Aust didn't help try the above.
Or ring the locksmith Buffalo at Ryde. Ask them if you bring the immobiliser can they put it in their reader to get the code. COs that's how they program a key. They get a working key, put it in their reader and then program a new key from the code they read.
Goodness, i was always wondering what that red key was for :S

No handbook with my car.
Maybe ill give guy i got it from a ring and see if he has it, although i doubt it.
But anyway, i finally found it!
I checked every spot you can think of, and my house isnt small =\
Turns out, i put it on the table, and there was a paper bag next to table, some one knocked keys into the bag.
And the bag was put away into the cupboard, and i even checked in the bag before.
But tonight i was going to use the bag, i took it out of the cupboard, and pulled the bubble rap out of it, and my keys were under the bubble wrap....
I was happy i found them, and pissed off i waisted sooo many hours looking for them. Thought i was going to pay the $600 +
Now im going to try what yous suggested, buy some blanks and the black key someone and get a heap of spares....
Thanks anyway for all your help guys!

-The red key doesnt do shit.
it does not have any codes or anything.
its just a template to you can get ur keys cut, since ur red key never gets used it has no wear and tear so it cuts more precise. if you use the red key in ur ignition it can fu=*ck up ur immobiliser system and eventually having to get that replaced. $400 or so through a locksmith with 2 keys
like limbo said.. you can copy honda keys with only the black key. u dont need BOTH.
in this case you've lost all ur keys. not sure if they can make keys without a template lol. but if they can.. jsut pay for the key to be made..
then.. go to a locksmith that can copy codes from the key or immob system.
they can take the code from the key or immob unit itself. the only down side of doing it through locksmiths is that u dont get an original honda key.

does that make sense? or confusing?
lol ive been through it with my ek1..
honda f*cks you around. and tries to make a bad situation worse.
they quoted me $600. (and i still had my red key)

Na i still had my spare key, its just that the black stuff has been peeled off so it cant start the car.

the locksmith i used. tried to get the immob code, but he couldnt because i put the red key in the ignition so we could push the damn car out of the carpark.. so the tow truck could get to it.
if i didnt put in the red key.. the code wouldnt of scrambled and the locksmith would of been able to get the code.
so i had to replace my immob unit. which set me back $400.

the immob chip is gone from it?
so there's like a whole at the top of the key right?
it can open ur doors?

i think that spare key is similar to the red key.. (meaning it doesnt do shit)
like if you've tried starting your car, you may of scrambled the code.
but if you still have a key you may be ok and the code isnt scrambled.. and just pay $80 for a new set of keys with the chip so you can start ur car.
let us know how you go.

i know i should put it all in one post but yeah lol.
but im sure all honda staff are told one thing to tell their customers in these situations. honda says pay this $$$$$$$ and it will be fixed theres no other way.
and these locksmiths that we all talk about find out different thigns through experience.
locksmith says. pay this $$$$ and it can be done in an easier and less expensive way.

Same here. I've just got loads of tape around mine :(
So i'd just need another key with a chip in it and then for that key to be cut to same as mine and programmed?
Anyone got an idea on prices for this?

In a bag.
There was a bag next to the table, and someone knocked it in. I even checked the bag but there was bubble wrap in there, so i didnt see it. Later i took the bag out, because i needed it, took out the bubble wrap and there it was. In the bottom of the paper bag...
And i spent HOURS searching the house over and over... pain in the ass!
